ANT-MAN #1-5 (Nick Spencer / Ramon Rosanas)

Scott is a fantastic character because he gives you that Spider-Man style everyman vibe, but you’re allowed to have Scott screw up more. Scott doesn’t necessarily have to be quite as virtuous as Peter Parker, and while he would like to do the good thing and be a hero he’s also very prone to taking short cuts. This is a guy who, every time he faced any sort of adversity or had a problem that he couldn’t solve, he tended to take the easy way out. That’s something that’s kind of dogged him throughout his life.

In terms of the kinds of stories I want to tell with him as a character I think people are going to like the fun approach we’re going to take here. We’ve set this series up as a vehicle for Scott to get himself into a lot of trouble, still come out on top and do some good, but a lot of the time he’s just trying to stay afloat.

He’s broke, he’s unhireable, and he’s got some pretty damaged emotional processes. So he’s facing a lot of his own obstacles. Before he can save the world or the city he’s in he’s got to worry about saving himself.
INTERVIEW DU SCÉNARISTE NICK SPENCER
Superior Iron Man and Tony Stark play a pretty specific role in the initial conceit of the book. Tony is a big part of the first issue, and he’ll be a big driver of Scott’s new status quo. Tony has a pivotal role to play, and he and Scott are fun to put in a room together. It’ll be a fun pairing.

Spencer: I can’t say too much this early on. The thing with Scott that is attractive to me is that he’s the kind of hero who has made a lot of mistakes. He’s no stranger to tragedy, some of his own making and some he’s had to deal with nonetheless. In this series he’s going to focus on being a hero; attempting to make up for his past, and try to prove to the world (and to himself) that he can be something.

• Scott Lang has never exactly been the world’s best super hero. Heck, most people don’t even think he’s been the best ANT-MAN – and the last guy invented Ultron and joined the Masters of Evil, so that’s saying something.

• But when the SUPERIOR IRON MAN calls with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Scott’s going to get a chance to turn it all around and be the hero he’s always dreamed of being.

• Sure he’s been to prison! Sure he’s been through a messy divorce! Sure he’s been, um… dead. But this time is different! This time nothing is gonna stop the astonishing ANT-MAN!

Taskmaster, and we’ll get into this a lot more in « Ant-Man » #3, is the closest thing Scott has to an arch-enemy. For whatever reason they’ve fought repeatedly. We in the real world know it is probably because [writer] David Michelinie loved both Ant-Man and Taskmaster. [Laughs]

It even happens with other writers, though. So the reality is that these guys came into contact with each other a lot, especially early in both their careers. So it’s going to be fun to have him pop up in Scott’s life again and it probably won’t be the last time.
• Ant-Man faces off against his deadliest arch-enemy – the mercenary known as TASKMASTER!
• Can we really call him an “arch-enemy”? Well, they’ve actually fought a bunch of times (look it up). And they definitely don’t like each other – that’s what “arch” means, right?
• There’s a mystery villain pulling the strings! He’s the one covered in heavy shadow. Mystery villains never have good lighting. Need to get to an Ikea or something.
• Ant-Man has to pull off an impossible break-in, but he can't do it alone. Which means... he's gonna need a new gang!

• Er, of criminals. New gang of criminals. Probably should mention that part.

• This is all because of that stupid mysterious bad guy we can't tell you about. Man, that is annoying.

• Out with it already, right? Comics.
