ARKHAM MANOR #1-6 (Gerry Duggan / Shawn Crystal)

A partir d’octobre, le catalogue Batman comptera deux nouvelles séries: Gotham Academy et Arkham Manor. Cette dernière suit la transformation du manoir Wayne en nouvel Asile d’Arkham (suite aux évènements de l’hebdomadaire Baman Eternal). Mais le sens de la justice de Batman sera mis à mal lorsque plusieurs des patients sont retrouvés morts.

A la tête de Arkham Manor, on retrouve le scénariste Gerry Duggan (qui a fait ses débuts chez Marvel avec des séries comme Deadpool et Nova) et le dessinateur **Shawn Crystal **(Fantomex Max).

Hé bien c’est très sympathique, cette petite chose.
Je m’intéresse pas mal à Gerry Duggan, que je trouve assez efficace et rapide. J’aime bien ses Nova et ses Hulk, et j’avais lu son one-shot sur Batman qui m’avait laissé une bonne impression.
Cette série (régulière ou mini ? J’ai cru comprendre que c’était une mini, non ?) enquille directement sur son épisode, reprenant un personnage. L’intrigue est classique : Batman infiltre l’asile (qui a déménagé) afin de retrouver un tueur qui s’en prend aux détenus.
C’est plutôt roublard, bien rythmé, avec une voix off assez riche et utile, qui ne s’écoute pas parler et qui n’est pas envahissante. Ça se lit très vite, mais le plein d’action rend cette vitesse supportable, sans effet négatif.
Le dessin est assez étonnant, crapoteux, caricatural, ombré, empruntant un peu des textures de Sean Murphy et des déformations de Matteo Scalera. C’est pas aussi abouti que l’un ou l’autre, mais ça fait preuve d’une personnalité plutôt affirmée.
Bref, c’est très agréable.

C’est une mini-série. C’est dommage d’ailleurs parce que c’est un concept qui est assez souple et qui a toute les capacités pour faire une bonne série régulière (ou suite de mini-séries). Le scénariste aurait pu jouer en quinconce avec les autres titres de la franchise pour secouer régulièrement le statu quo avec l’arrivée de nouvelles têtes et éviter d’avoir continuellement Batman au premier plan*. Il aurait pu jouer directement sur la continuité (le Joker de Endgame, le Chapelier Fou de Eternal, etc…) tout en s’aménageant de la place pour ses propres développements (Mr. Freeze, en l’occurrence). Une belle occasion manquée.

Quant à Shawn Crystal (qu’on avait déjà vu sur Fantomex Max), il a un style fort, pas désagréable, mais on sent vite les limites du garçon en terme d’anatomie (même dissimulée sous une avalanche de petits traits). Rien de catastrophique cela dit.

c’était hyper sympa comme mini. J’aime bien la forme du récit. Un peu comme le *Detective Comics * pré-52 où on suivait des enquêtes en quelques numéros. Et puis le Batman détective roublard, c’est quand même plus détente que les Batman de Snyder.
