In my mind, Arcade had to win. The whole point of the series was putting these characters against an unwinnable scenario and showing how it changed them. This was never a story about perfect heroes who win out despite the odds. It’s a story about a worst-case scenario and what it takes to survive. At the same time, we didn’t want Arcade to succeed in killing all of these characters. There are a lot of stories left to tell with them, especially now that the world knows what they’ve just been through.
Arcade definitely thinks he’s won, both the game and the respect of the world. In « Avengers Undercover, » we’ll be dealing with an Arcade who is on top of the world. He’s basking in the afterglow of his greatest victory, while the survivors are dealing with the consequences of defeat. Our first arc deals heavily with both situations.
L’éditeur Marvel Comics a proposé, cette semaine, un fascicule mettant en avant les nouvelles séries All-New Marvel Now. Voici une première page de Avengers Undercover #1:
The videos were an Internet phenomenon. In the three months since their escape, the survivors have become pseudo-celebrities. The whole world knows who they are and everyone seems to have an opinion about what they did (or didn’t) do in the arena.
Murder World changed these kids in profound ways and getting famous for it has changed them even more. We find them at the beginning of Avengers Undercover #1 struggling with the fact that they no longer fit very well into their old lives. They may have survived but none of them really made it all the way back.
“DESCENT” PART 4 (OF 4): BARON ZEMO MAKES OUR YOUNG HEROES AN OFFER THEY CAN’T REFUSE!
• What did the teen survivors of Murder World do last issue to become Public Enemy #1—and what does Zemo tempt them with in response?
• Who accepts Zemo’s invite? And who goes rogue?
• Our first arc comes to a chilling close—and what happens here makes it too late for our heroes to go back!

The characters inhabit a moral grey area and most of the conflict comes from the kids trying to decide between lightness and dark. We needed a villain who could make the dark side seem reasonable and even appealing. And with the word « Avengers » on our covers, it made sense to shoot for an old school Avengers villain. Zemo was one of the first names editor Bill Rosemann and I threw out. Fortunately, no one else was using him.
I love Zemo’s moral ambiguity. Helmut has never been evil for evil’s sake. Sure, his father was a Nazi and he sort of dresses like a Nazi, but this is a complicated man. He’s a self-interested pragmatist who’s capable of just about anything if properly motivated. But his is a practical brand of villainy that makes a certain amount of sense. It makes him relatable. Relatable villains are a lot more fun to write.
Tigh is coming in to take over for Kev Walker who is moving on to « New Avengers. » I could write a whole dissertation on the ways we will miss Kev, but I’ll spare you. The simple fact is, Kev Walker is a tough act to follow.
Amazingly, Tigh stepped straight up to the plate with Issue #8 and crushed it. We gave him two of the craziest issues in the whole series, and he didn’t miss a single beat. His art is dense and kinetic. His storytelling is superb, and he draws the hell out of those small quiet character moments. He’s perfect for this story.
