Physically, metaphorically, in every way possible, Gotham City has almost killed Batman more times than he cares to count – yet he always stands firm in his calling. However, when a mysterious hero naming himself “Gotham” arrives claiming to be the city’s newest protector, will Batman bring him into the fold– or have a super-sized fight on his hands? Will it even matter if Batman wins, once Gothamites adopt the youthful Gotham as their favored son?
As for this brash new hero, can he seize the role of top guardian, or will he crumble under the weight of the most broken city on Earth? After all, this is the town that’s been demonically possessed, turned into an earth quake-ravaged No Man’s Land and both Contagioned AND Jokerized in recent years; is Gotham up to the task of protecting the city?
“He’s young and idealistic says Batman Group Editor Mark Doyle. “Like someone who joins the Peace Corps… but goes into the heart of some Third World war zone thinking he knows how to fix everything. One problem leads to another.”

I’ve tabled at a lot of comic cons, so my table was a mess! It’s got Diet Pepsi bottles all over the place and you have the display but behind it is just chaos and ugliness! So she goes « pitch me a comic » and I was totally unprepared and I pitched her something and it just died. It fell out of my mouth and onto the table like a dead rat and she’s poking it and it was just horrible. You can see in her face “oh, not this” and she said very kindly “Interesting, why don’t I hand you over to one of my assistant editors and maybe you could do an eight-pager for us.” So she handed me over to Mark Doyle and we did an eight-pager together with Tom Fowler, and that was my first comic.
Mark and I worked together for about a year developing pitches and I did another eight-pager for Vertigo, which is what I was just Eisner-nominated for and then Mark became the Bat editor.
I think it got really exciting when we talked about the ideas for the issue and the different options. You know, one option is to just go really bombastic and make it something that would be like, « and coming up in All-Star and coming up in Batman! » And we both opted not to do that, and instead to try to show that we have priorities that are really about showing the fans in this issue that there are some new elements in the mythology that should really excite them — like Duke Thomas and his role coming up — but Tom also wanted to show very much, I think, that a lot of the classic elements are back in cool ways, stronger than ever — the Cave, Alfred, the money, the gadgets, Batman himself.
And for me, it was a straight Ghostbuster moment, like, when someone asks you to be god, you say “Yes.” When Scott Snyder asks you to co-write an issue of Batman, you say yes. You find a way to make it happen.
And then when we started talking about all these themes. And if you know my work, I love one-and-dones, and I think so much can be done with them. And Scott feels the same way. And the chance to build one of those together, and have the theme of that issue be this idea of adventures that never end, and yet they always have to end — and that sort of contradiction creating the irony of the story.
And that’s what a calendar is — it’s both the optimism of something coming and the pessimism of knowing that something’s going to finally end someday.
When I was doing Batman, the problem with being collaborative with Eternal, even though we overlap with it, was just the speed with which it came out. That made it hard to pivot. Being on a monthly book, and being involved in some of the stuff that is coming in the Bat world too, it’s a joy to see the books open up and, I know that Tom has a very, very singular vision for Batman so the characters in the story are deeply about Bruce and Gotham in ways that I think are really going to inspire people and excite people. It’s always great to see more crossover between characters like Duke Thomas and seeing Batwoman in Detective and what’s going on with some of the Robin characters and all that stuff so…yeah, we’re a pretty collaborative group, I think, all around.
A lot of my stories are about Batman’s mortality. To me that what makes Batman interesting or makes him sort of unique in the DC universe is that he’s like us, he can die, he can sacrifice himself. He’s not Superman, he’s not a god. He’s just doing the best he can with his will and his wits. Yeah, that concept of Batman as not a god, as not being omnipotent will play a central role in the whole thing.
