Créée à l’occasion du jeu Marvel Puzzle Quest, Captain Carter est ensuite apparue dans le volume 3 du comic-bookExiles avant d’être popularisée cette année par son rôle dans la série animée What If ?.
Cette version alternative de Peggy Carter aura droit à une nouvelle déclinaison en mini-série à partir de mars 2022. Captain Carter sera écrit par Jamie McKelvie (Young Avengers) et dessiné par Marika Cresta (Doctor Aphra).
« I’m as big a fan of the Captain Carter we’ve seen onscreen as anybody, so I jumped at the chance to create our own version, » McKelvie states in Marvel’s announcement.
« I’m having a great time exploring what it would be like for Peggy to wake up nearly 80 years after the end of the war, » he continues.

WOMAN OUT OF TIME?
A reality where Agent Peggy Carter took the Super-Soldier Serum is turned upside down when the World War II hero is pulled from the ice where she was lost in action decades before. Peggy struggles to find her footing in a modern world that’s gotten a lot more complicated - cities are louder, technology is smarter and enemies wear friendly faces. Everyone with an agenda wants Captain Carter on their side, but what does Peggy want? And will she have time to figure it out when mysterious forces are already gunning for her?

Jamie McKelvie et Marika Cresta lancent un « spin-off » de la série Disney+ What If?, bien que le perso’ soit apparu en comics avant. Captain Carter fait bien ses débuts ici… et bon, ce n’est pas mauvais, mais ce n’est pas réussi, non plus.
On a ici les premiers pas de Peggy après son réveil, avec notamment des discussions difficiles entre les Russes, les Américains et les Britanniques sur son statut juridique, et à qui elle « revient ». Le Super-Soldat est en effet « une production » des Alliés, avec un sérum américain mais une Peggy britannique. Bon, Peggy rentre à Londres, rencontre un Premier Ministre qui a de « grands » projets pour elle, et le STRIKE. Lizzie Braddock (!) est son assistante, l’emmène au cimetière voir ses proches, mais Peggy est forcée d’agir publiquement face à l’Hydra. La presse arrive à ses portes, alors.
Bon, tout ça se lit, mais sans passion. Jamie McKelvie commence par une intro’ vraiment anti-dynamique, avec une trop longue discussion géopolitique. Ces échanges sont intéressants, et une bonne idée, mais ça « coupe » tout lancement, et le scénariste galère à créé un rythme, après. Le reste n’est pas « mauvais », mais ça se suit sans passion, sans être vraiment pris dans les événements.
Des événements en outre assez basiques, classiques, prévisibles. Une impression laissée aussi par Marika Cresta, dont le trait n’est jamais en défaut, mais qui n’est jamais réussi ou épatant.
Un début très morne, très peu dynamique. Je ne suis pas sûr d’y revenir.

« WOMAN OUT OF TIME » CONTINUES!
