Doctor Doom has a huge year ahead of him, with Doomquest, and a return in Captain America, plus he’s getting new one-shots starting in July titled Challenges of Doom ! Kicking things off is Al Ewing and Mike Henderson with Doom taking on Mr. Fantastic!
That’s just the start of a series of five one-shots from Al Ewing and a lineup of artists. Each issue focuses on a major clash between Doom and one of his greatest rivals, digging into the moments that helped shape him into one of Marvel’s most formidable villains.
The series continues through the year, with issues centered on Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Magneto, and Namor. Each story zeroes in on a defining confrontation, exploring Doom’s ambition, intelligence, and drive for control through high-stakes encounters.
The first issue, featuring art by Mike Henderson, looks back at the early rivalry between Victor Von Doom and Reed Richards. It highlights the battle of intellect that set the stage for their long-standing feud and the events that pushed Doom toward becoming the figure he is known as today.
“CHALLENGES OF DOOM will pit the Lord of Latveria against some of the prime movers of the Marvel Universe as a way of illuminating different facets of Doom’s power, personality, intellect and skill,” Executive Editor Tom Brevoort explains. “Through them, you’ll get a full picture of just why Doom is the greatest of all Marvel’s villains.”

Gros bof. Enième projet Marvel autour de Dr Doom cette année, avec encore Al Ewing qui ici montre… un remake de l’origine de Victor von Doom. En montrant comment il a attiré l’attention de l’Empire State University en Latvérie, comment il a rencontré Reed, comment il a lancé sa machine et a croisé Mephisto, comment il a été blessé, comment il a trouvé un temple en Himalaya et est devenu Dr Doom.
Bon. C’est bien pour ce que c’est, c’est correct, c’est lisible, c’est efficacement dessiné par Mike Henderson, et ça fait bien le job. C’est plus synthétique que ce qu’avait fait Ed Brubaker dans sa mini-série synthèse, mais… mais objectivement, c’est moins puissant, moins épique, moins dramatique, moins poétique, moins lyrique que ce qu’avaient fait jadis initialement Stan Lee et Jack Kirby.
Correct mais rébarbatif sans égaler le produit de base. Gros bof, donc.

C’est pas mauvais, mais c’est pas brillant. Al Ewing continue ses « Challenges of Doom », avec ici un Victor qui se lasse de ses défaites face aux 4 Fantastiques aux débuts de l’univers Marvel. Il veut intégrer une autre carte dans l’équation, et il tente de convaincre Spider-Man de l’aider, par la force, par la science et par la magie. Finalement, au fil de leurs combats, Peter continue de refuser sur le principe, puis s’emporte et évoque la responsabilité de bien agir, et d’être responsable pour autrui. Cela rappelle à Victor sa responsabilité envers sa mère, et il vient défier Mephisto pour son âme.
Pas mauvais, mais pas passionnant et pas formidable. Les confrontations entre Dr Doom et Spider-Man sont classiques mais efficaces, la posture et le discours de Peter sont bons, mais… mais ça n’est pas emballant. C’est assez basique, c’est assez attendu en soi, et si ça se lit, ça s’oublie bien vite, avec des dessins corrects mais eux aussi « juste » corrects de David Messina.
Totalement mineur et dispensable.
