DC has announced details for Clayface: Celebrity Dirt, a new miniseries arriving this October from the creative team of acclaimed horror writer Jude Ellison S. Doyle, artist Fran Galán, colorist Patricio Delpeche, and letterer Tom Napolitano. The six-issue Clayface comic miniseries follows the classic Batman villain as he escapes Arkham Towers, ready to stage his comeback, only to discover that someone else has stolen his name, his face, and his long-lost stardom.
While there have been many incarnations of Clayface in comics and other media over the years, the most famous interpretation has arguably been the depiction in the ’90s Batman: The Animated Series which influenced the aforementioned live-action film. This upcoming Clayface comic miniseries follows the original, Basil Karlo, who encounters a doppelgänger imposter.

Intéressant, mais pas encore emballant. Jude Ellison S..Doyle lance efficacement sa saga, où un Clayface qu’on dit être Todd Russell mais qui croit être Basil Karlo s’échappe des Arkham Towers quand il découvre qu’un Basil Karlo dit avoir été soigné et a repris sa carrière. Ce Clayface tue en s’échappant et file vers Hollywood, où Karlo a de beaux rôles mais semble aspirer les visages des femmes.
C’est intéressant, oui. Le scénario joue bien sur l’ambivalence sur Clayface et Karlo, et l’évasion est bien rude avec aussi un côté oppressant pour Karlo. C’est bien mais il en manque encore pour m’emballer, avec des dessins jolis et une belle ambiance flirtant avec le glauque et gore de Fran Galan.
Bon début à travailler.

Solide. Jude Ellison S. Doyle livre un bon épisode, où le vrai Basil enquête sur le Faux Basil, qui continue d’être une star. Basil s’installe à Hollywood, tente d’alerter son ancien réseau mais personne ne le croit. Il prend les identités d’un vieux monsieur décédé puis d’une salariée ayant perdu son téléphone pour s’approcher, mais il apprend que les équipes se méfient du Faux Basil, qui semble avoir des attitudes étranges avec les jeunes femmes. Basil se lie aussi avec une voisine, jeune serveuse qui l’aide au quotidien et lui donne quelques conseils moraux, mais… un animateur de radio masculiniste semble s’effondrer sur lui-même en pleine émission, et un rôdeur semble avoir les mêmes capacités que Clayface et s’en prend à la jeune femme.
C’est bien, oui. Le scénario avance, l’enquête se diversifie. Ça ne révolutionne rien mais ça fait bien le job, avec des éléments qui nourrissent l’ensemble et une bonne voix-off d’un Basil paumé et touchant. Le dessin de Fran Galan est bon, dynamique, crade et efficace.
Des avancées pour un bon numéro.

Intéressant. Jude Ellison S. Doyle affine son intrigue en l’avançant intelligemment. Plusieurs personnes se ratatinent en argile alors qu’ils atteignent des sommets en sport, en danse, en combat, et le vrai Basil Karlo en parle à Victoria Octorber, scientifique transgenre qui fut son amie mais qui le rejette après que Basil lui ait dit qu’il ne pouvait pas apparaître publiquement à ses côtés. Basil conteste en disant que ce n’est pas lui, mais elle lui rappelle que Basil Karlo est une création : il est de base Matt Hagen, petite frappe qui s’est réinventé en acteur sous le nom de scène Basil Karlo. Il confirme mais il conteste ce qu’elle lui reproche, et elle accepte de mener des recherches sur les compléments alimentaires qui semblent liés aux phénomènes. Basil se rend compte que la serveuse qu’il aimait bien n’est plus là, et il enquête pour être agressé par une forme d’argile et découvrir chez elle des photos de plusieurs femmes inconnues. En parallèle, la serveuse est prisonnière d’une créature au visage mouvant, qui semble prendre l’apparence de Basil, et qui veut la changer pour « pouvoir la toucher »…
C’est intéressant, oui. Le scénario est correct sur l’enquête, et il y a une bonne réutilisation d’October. La révélation sur Hagen / Karlo est intéressante même si elle contredit des éléments de continuité, et je suis curieux de la suite. Fran Galan continue de livrer de belles planches, avec de belles ambiances.
Une bonne saga qui se poursuit.
