I was offered the book by [editor] Nick Lowe, and he basically said that he had been talking to Brian Bendis, and he had suggested me, because, I believe as Bendis put it, « Greg’s got a son about Scott’s age, and it seems that could be a really good fit. » And that was how Nick sort of pitched it.
I thought about it, and I was like, « Well, that sounds like it would be a hell of a lot of fun. Let’s try it. » There are a whole lot of irons in the fire right now, and timing for a freelancer is everything: When there’s a gap in the schedule, when you’re free, when you’re not, what’s coming up, what fell through and what didn’t. This was the right offer at the right time. It feels like I’ve been misquoted about this: I’ve never felt like, « Eh, fuck work-for-hire. » Work-for-hire has been very, very good to me, in many, many ways. It is a privilege, more often than not, to get to work on iconic characters. You’re talking about Scott Summers. Come on! This is a cool opportunity.

The continuity still stands. So, 16-year old Scott is interacting in a world where the older version has already been marching along. I think that the chance to take a look at the characters, not only at different stages of their development but then to see how those stages influence and change and how that may reflect, especially how they deal with the legacy of their future selves. That’s a gold mine. I love that.

Someone asked me on Twitter, « Why didn’t you explain why Corsair was alive? » And I don’t like questions like that because it implies the answer’s not forthcoming. You’re one issue in! It’s 20 pages long! There was a lot I had to do! [Laughs] The first thing in the issue was not, « Explain why Corsair is still standing. » It will be explained. I know what happened to him. I will have an explanation for it. It will come out at the appropriate time in the story. It will not come out until then – because you’ve got to remember that young Scott doesn’t know this happened to his dad. So, his first question to his dad isn’t, « Well, weren’t you dead twice? » He got the first one – « I thought the plane blew up! Oh, okay! You were abducted by aliens! Well, that’s not the weirdest thing that’s happened in my life. Sure, I can accept that! »
