Après s’être immiscé dans les évènements de la première Secret Wars (1984-85), Deadpool s’intercale dans la continuité de Spider-Man et choppe le costume symbiotique avant qu’il ne soit récupéré par Eddie Brock.
C’est les prémices de la mini-série Deadpool : Back in Black. Aux manettes, on retrouve le scénariste Cullen Bunn et l’artiste Salva Espin, tous les deux responsables de nombreux récits sur le mercenaire à la grande gueule et notamment de la mini-série Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars.
