DEVOLUTION #1-5 (Rick Remender / Jonathan Wayshak)

DEVOLUTION is a return to the pulp/grindhouse science fiction I built my career on starting with FEAR AGENT…]
Joining us will be my FEAR AGENT colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Rus Wooton, longtime friends and collaborators who I respect and trust. I’m also blown away by the artists Nick has lined up for the covers as well, ranging, in alphabetical order, from Jae Lee to Alex Ross to Ryan Sook: The series will be loaded with A-list talent. We’ve got a very exciting story to tell with a heavy dose of high-octane action, character drama, a world of strange reverse mutations, and social commentary as we follow the last tribe of humans inoculated from the devolution agent as they set out on a desperate journey to try to find a way to re-evolve life on Earth.

“Jon Wayshak and Jordan Boyd are two of the very best guys working and I’m excited to see them take this old story and give it new life,” Remender said in a statement. “Jon is a great storyteller, marvelous illustrator and world-class stylist. His inks and textures are unparalleled. With Jordan doing his usual masterful colors, we have the new superstar art teams in the galaxy of the universe of power and magic and love and d-e-v-o.”

“I can’t thank Rick enough for bringing Jon on board. Rick opened up my eyes to an art style I had not seen before, and man, it’s hands-down fantastic. Jon brings an artistic quality to the series that few others could,” said Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci. “As you can see from the preview pages accompanying this announcement, he brings out the very best in Rick Remender’s script, just as the writer coaxes the very best effort and imagination from Jon. Add Jordan’s eye for colors, and the series really rocks! It’s a great pairing, and we couldn’t be happier.”
Once contract things were worked out, schedules would get screwed up. Paul Renaud had, at one point, signed on to draw it and then, due to some of my own scheduling problems, he couldn’t. I was very fortunate to get to work with him at Marvel. During that time, that was one of the things that was eating up most of my schedule. It was a lot of varying factors. Once I got back around to it, and Paul had already moved on; I had to line up a new artist. I got Jon Wayshak, who is one of my favorite artists. He came up with Jerome Opena and those two guys were two of my heroes, going back to my time in the Bay Area. We brought in Jordan Boyd to realize it and give it his color love. It was just a series of road blocks.

At one point, it just kind of drifted. Once Jon and Jordan signed on, it was easier to realize it. It’s very odd seeing a script I wrote a decade ago brought to life. It’s very interesting, because I see a lot of my old writing habits and I haven’t seen them in a while. Obviously I’m going to be punching up the dialog a bit and revising bits, but it’s mostly the same thing I wrote ten years ago.
MATURE READERS

Every living creature on Earth has been devolved - the evolutionary clock turned back, reverting all life to odd mutations and prehistoric incarnations. The cities of man are little more than bloody territories ruthlessly dominated by tribal Neanderthals ruling from the backs of mammoths, packs of saber-toothed tigers, and giant man-eating insects. Writer Rick Remender (Black Science, Fear Agent), artist Jon Wayshak (The Authority), and colorist Jordan Boyd (Ant-Man, Planet Hulk) take you on a journey with the last band of “Still Sapien” humans in the hope of locating an antidote and re-evolving the human race.
