A travers la campagne « What is the Key ? » l’éditeur Dynamite Entertainment annonce l’arrivée des personnages « Gold Key » Turok , Doctor Spektor , Solar , et Magnus dans son catalogue. De 2009 à 2011, les propriétés Gold Key étaient publiées par Dark Horse sous l’égide du responsable Jim Shooter qui préféra la sureté d’un éditeur bien établi plutôt que de relancer Valiant comme il s’y était engagé.
Les hostilités débuteront dès févriers avec la nouvelle série « Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Greg Pak (Action Comics ) et Mirko Colak , suivie en mars par « Magnus: Robot Fighter Fred Van Lente (Archer & Armstrong ) et Cory Smith . Puis, en avril, « The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor Mark Waid (Daredevil ) racontant les exploits d’une star du paranormal. Et enfin « Solar: Man of the Atom Frank Barbiere (Five Ghosts ) en mai. Les dessinateurs des deux dernières séries n’ont pas été annoncés.
La publication en « canon » des nouvelles séries « Gold Key », réalisées par des auteurs « éclectiques » de la bande dessinée américaine, ressemble fortement à la politique établie avec succès en 2012 par Valiant , ex-détenteur des droits de Gold Key dans les années 90.

« The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor » by Mark Waid is going to be amazing. It’s basically Mark’s take on, « What is magic in the modern age? » How would someone that thinks that magic is real deal with magic, and would that person use it for celebrity? It deals a lot with the idea of cynicism towards awe and wonder – when the cover comes off of your eyes, and you actually see that there’s more than just when you see in front of you, it’s pretty remarkable. It’s a really fun story that Mark is weaving.

Doctor Spektor, je connais for mal. En fait, je n’en connais que quelques épisodes que j’ai glanés au détour de scannblogs divers (et j’ai trouvé ça assez chouette, dans le genre enquêteur de paranormal). Et sérieux, ça me tente bien, cette reprise par Waid.

The essential aspect, I thought, was “ghostbuster/adversary of the supernatural who uses his fortune and sorcery resources to combat the dark forces.” It wasn’t hard to update, and I hope we’ve kept the basic spirit of the original. The big departure was making him a little younger and far more of a celebrity. Now he’s a world-famous reality-show superstar who fights all his battles with one eye on the camera.

That he’s got more money than God. That because he enjoys being a showman, it’s worth it to him to spend fifty million dollars launching a specially designed sunlight-reflective satellite into orbit in order to defeat a vampire when, frankly, a wooden stake would do the job.

That anecdote goes a long way towards hitting the overall gestalt, but not in a negative way. Yes, there were some nervous people up there, but DC office culture in the late 1980s was defined by Dick Giordano, Executive Editor and the all-time master of knowing just how much rope to give to creators and staffers. Controlled chaos. Lightly managed mayhem. The last great era of taking chances first and sweating the P&L sheets later. If you were an editor, as long as your book sold and passed the Comics Code, you were pretty much left alone. No one said to you, “your book isn’t budgeted for a Kevin Nowlan story” or “This cover sketch has to be approved by a committee.” When Brian Augustyn pitched GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT and, that same morning, we roped Mike Mignola into committing to draw it, it was approved that day. Everyone, me included, got shot down from time to time, but the overall sense of audacity and fearlessness, particularly among the younger editors, was strong and that all came from Giordano. God, how I miss him.
