Entre deux numéros de American Vampire, l’artiste Rafael Albuquerque travaille en collaboration avec le scénariste Mike Johnson (Supergirl) sur EI8HT. Le comics raconte les déboires de Joshua, un voyageur temporel amnésique qui se retrouve bloqué dans une dimension inhospitalière.

Le premier numéro de EI8GHT sortira en février 2015.

The Meld is a lost place in time — almost like a temporal garbage, where everything that ever walked on the face of Earth, or might do at some point, may coexist. The challenge here was creating a believable environment, with the own evolution of this place — different societies, different kind of people, different fauna, and how they all interact in their own way. When such a different environment somehow gets in contact with our own temporal line it can be very dangerous. That’s when our adventure begins.

For me, it’s the best kind of sci-fi because it really digs into some ideas and goes to speculative places. The simplest form of sci-fi reads: if there are aliens and space ships and robots, then it’s sci-fi. But if it doesn’t deal with ideas, is it really doing what sci-fi is capable of? Horror is the same. If you just have monsters running around punching each other (laughter), you’re dealing with the tropes of horror without really getting at what the genre can do to give you an experience.

Ça faisait bien longtemps que je n’avais pas été emballé par un comic Dark Horse à ce point.
C’est plutôt une bonne boîte, Dark Horse, ils savent produire, c’est propre, léché, solide, les collections ont une personnalité (leur ligne Star Wars était super, la tonalité de la ligne Mignola est cohérente et bien tenue…), mais depuis quelques années, pas mal de leurs productions semblent quelque peu trop calibrées, sans éclats. Le tandem Seeley / Norton, les gars de Revival, quand ils font The Occultist, c’est moins bien.
Pourtant, j’ai longtemps été super client, autant sur les produits de licence que sur les creator owned. Mais depuis quelque temps, j’étais moins fan.
Là, Albuquerque sur Ei8ht, c’est quand même assez formidable. Narration limpide (ce qui contraste avec le mystère ambiant), dessin d’une expressivité spectaculaire, avec une forte influence japonaise qui ressort (Shirow, surtout, je trouve…), trait vigoureux mais lisible (il réussit là où Scalera finit parfois par être confus), choix graphique forts (les codes couleurs pour les différentes époques…).
C’est riche, dense, avec plein de personnages, mais les enjeux sont bien posés, les scènes d’action entraînantes et le tout se lit sans temps mort, vite et de manière passionnante.
À surveiller de très près.
