I HATE FAIRYLAND #1-10 (Skottie Young)

It’s an idea I’ve been playing around with for years. Alice in Wonderland was the first novel I ever read on my own as a child. I was in love with the odd characters, the bizarre songs and the puzzle-like wordplay. Then I listened to the audiobook once day while inking and thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I was an anxious mess trying to concentrate on work while listening the nonsense that used to make that book so appealing as a child.

Then we had our first kid. You can’t avoid shows like Dora The Explorer and your house becomes filled with dozens and dozens of pictures. The more I took in some of these kids books and shows, I Hate Fairyland started to come to life. I started wondering why Dora wasn’t driven absolutely nuts by that map and his two minute song consisting of only I’m The Map! I wondered why Sam I am didn’t strangle the annoying guy that insisted over and over that the eggs were clearly green and rotten.

My pleasure, and thank you. It’s great to finally start getting feedback on the book outside of my circle of friends.

I think it’s been kicking around for about four years now, or sometime close to that. My family was on a trip to Michigan to visit Jason Howard and his family. While the kids and our wives hung out at the pool, Jason and I did want comic people do. Go off, grab coffees and talk comics. I was really starting to get the itch to tell my own stories and had been throwing ideas around for awhile but it that was the day I randomly tossed out the concept of a kid getting trapped in a children’s fantasy world and being stuck there for years. At first, it was a boy who grew to be a big, roughneck looking man still dressed as a kid. Over the years it took many shapes until landing on our adorably insane little Gert. I don’t want to give too much away about those other forms because a lot of them have found their way in to other arcs of the story. So luckily all those ideas and the time put into them will get put to work.
Malgré la conclusion plutôt radicale de la mini-série I Hate Fairyland, l’artiste Skottie Young révèle qu’une suite est bien dans les tuyaux et qu’elle paraitra même dès juin prochain chez Image Comics.
*“It should be on shelves in June….You’ll just have to wait and see. I will say this, the greatest thing about this book for me is this world is so massive and never ending there really is no end to the kind of stories or vignettes that I can get into. It’s really never ending.

More I Hate Fairyland! I’m so glad that everybody supported, and that the retailers got behind me. I’m going to keep telling a lot of stories with these wacky characters.”*

What I say, mostly, with it is … I don’t know that I was giving a commentary, at least to my mind, on millennials or anything like that, but speaking to myself. I guess I’m Generation X, maybe. I’m 38. I feel like, for me in particular, my life - I think there’s a lot of us now - I look back at my dad. You said “they put away those things.” I can’t remember my dad, when he was my age, talking about entertainment a lot or hobbies a lot, only things that you do when you’re an adult, like build things, and mow lawns, and raise kids, and watch sports. It was kind of like anything outside of that was, “That’s not what grown-ups do.”

For me, my whole life is the exact opposite. I am at home with young children and dogs, so my house is filled with toys, and cartoons are always on, and dog toys are laying around. It’s covered in comic books and art books, so it’s like this weird Pee-wee’s Playhouse in a way, and then my escape from that is to my studio, my office space, which is covered in comics and art books, and the walls are plastered with drawings and paintings, and the walls are green and orange, and awesome cartoons are playing. I’m making that stuff as well. I’m almost 40 and kind of live in this weird, childlike world. I don’t know if I want to say it’s juvenile, but very whimsical and pretend.
