IMPERIAL WAR: IMPERIAL GUARDIANS #1 will be written by Dan Abnett, the influential storyteller behind Marvel space epics like ANNIHILATION and WAR OF KINGS (2009) and drawn by Cory Smith, the acclaimed artist known for his work on NOVA (2015) and more recently, FANTASTIC FOUR (2022). Co-written by Hickman, all five IMPERIAL WAR one-shots represent key chapters of the overall IMPERIAL narrative and lay the foundation for upcoming series launching in this burgeoning cosmic landscape. In IMPERIAL GUARDIANS, CAPTAIN MARVEL, GAMORA, and DARKHAWK and more assemble as a new space-faring super team to take on the many threats emerging from the conflict raging across the stars—beginning with a dark conspiracy at the heart of the SKRULL Empire!
As the events of IMPERIAL explode in fatal fashion, the Super-Skrull finds himself at the center of a seditious scheme with consequences that will be felt by the entire cosmos! Très bon et terrible one-shot, qui prépare en un sens peu la suite mais explique (enfin) les dessous de la conspiration. Dan Abnett & Jonathan Hickman montrent en effet comment, neuf mois avant Imperial, les Skrulls ont commencé à s’agiter aux bruits de la résurrection de Veranke, la prophétesse devenue reine pour Secret Invasion. Gamora l’a entendu aussi, et s’est alliée à Darkhawk (Chris Powell, de retour en poste après l’échec de son successeur dans un one-shot il y a quelques années, apparemment) qui a des visions d’une apocalypse à venir via son armure. Ils croisent Carol Danvers, elle aussi sensible aux bruits, et ils s’allient malgré les crispations. Ils pistent cette Veranke pendant un mois, puis se séparent quand Carol veut aller couvrir Throneworld et protéger l’Alliance Kree / Skrull, alors que Gamora suit les penchants de Darkhawk. Kl’rt apprend également le retour de Veranke et va la confronter, il ne sent rien d’elle et est sensible à son discours rappelant que les Skrulls passent d’un oppresseur à un autre avec l’Union Cosmique à venir. Gamora et Darkhawk trouvent Veranke, et l’identifient comme un caméléon de la Garde Impériale Shi’ar. Le Super-Skrull arrive, tue le caméléon mais refuse qu’il soit annoncé que les Skrulls se soient fait avoir, mais aussi car il croit dans le discours de la fausse Veranke. Il les affronte, Gamora et Darkhawk s’enfuient mais trouvent Maximus dans leur vaisseau. Ils refusent sa proposition de laisser courir, et Maximus demande à son allié Cosmic Ghost Rider de les tuer - ce qu’il semble faire !
C’est très bien, oui. J’ignore qui fait quoi, mais Abnett & Hickman tiennent bien leurs personnages (très bonnes caractérisations pour le trio) et leur intrigue (qui a enfin du sens et de la pertinence, qui manquent dans la mini-série principale). C’est cool, fluide, intense et prenant, avec un final rude et de forts beaux dessins de Cory Smith.
Très bon, très dur, très bien, même si le one-shot n’ouvre pas sur grand-chose de la suite, bien qu’il soit indispensable à la saga elle-même.
mais c’est qu il va finir par l aimé cette saga ?
Je ne pense pas, car ça reste assez creux et vide, mais ça paraît là plus cohérent et moins je-m’en-foutiste.
