Nous annoncions hier que Darwyn Cooke était admis en soins palliatifs à cause d’un cancer fulgurant. C’est avec le cœur lourd que nous apprenons aujourd’hui la disparition de ce grand artiste.
Il avait commencé sa carrière dans les années 90 en travaillant sur les séries animées de DC, notamment en tant que Storyboarder sur Batman. Il réalisa ensuite le générique de Batman : la Relève, si reconnaissable.
C’est en 2000 qu’il perce dans le milieu de la bande-dessinée avec Batman : Ego puis Catwoman sur un scénario de Ed Brubaker. A partir de là, tout s’enchaine pour l’artiste qui illustre ça et là des projets aussi variés que surprenants (Doop & Wolverine, X-Statix, Spider-Man’s Tangled Web).
La consécration vient à la fin de l’année 2004 lorsqu’il entreprend la réalisation de DC : la nouvelle frontière, mini-série où il témoigne du passage de flambeau entre l’âge d’or et l’âge d’argent avec son style si « rétro ».
Artiste multi-récompensé, il passe les années suivantes à voguer entre ses projets personnels (l’adaptation des romans Parker de Richard Stark) et les travaux de commandes (comme le crossover Batman/Spirit ou le décrié Before Watchmen).
En 2015, Cooke illustre The Twillight Children sur un scénario de Gilbert Hernandez pour le compte de Vertigo. Depuis 2016, il travaillait avec Jeff Parker et Evan Shaner sur la réactualisation de la série Hanna-Barbera Future Quest.
Darwyn Cooke est né le 13 mai 1962 et décède le 14 mai 2016. Puisse sa fin avoir été aussi claire que les pages qu’il nous a présenté pendant ses belles années.

Je lisais encore l’autre jour un fill-in au « X-Force » de Peter Milligan signé par Darwyn Cooke (en remplacement de l’artiste régulier Mike Allred), et je me disais à chaque page que ce mec avait décidément un talent fou…
Dégoûté et triste, c’était un très grand monsieur du comic. RIP Darwin j’espère que tu n’as pas souffert et que tu es partis dignement

C’est pas tous les jours que je ressens ça face au décès d’un dessinateur, mais là, ça me fait vraiment beaucoup de peine. Selon moi, c’est un auteur formidable et peut-être l’un des meilleurs dessinateurs du monde. Quelqu’un qui écrit aussi bien qu’il dessine (voir son Selina’s Big Score). Quelqu’un qui assimile et mélange à la perfection Bruce Timm et Jim Steranko (voir ses Parker). Quelqu’un qui absorbe parfaitement les codes esthétiques des époques passées. Ses planches me laissent sur les fesses à chaque fois que je m’y plonge, sans jamais me lasser. J’adore. Et j’attendais avec impatience les œuvres suivantes. Quelle tristesse.

Darwyn was one of our medium’s true innovators. A gifted artist and master storyteller, Darwyn began his career as a magazine art director and graphic designer. After answering an ad placed by Warner Bros animator Bruce Timm, Darwyn entered the world of animation, where he contributed to such shows as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and Men In Black: The Series. From there, Darwyn made the leap into print comics, where his character design was never more effective, enduring or entrancing. It was the look and honest simplicity of his characters for which Cooke became famous—as first seen in his breakout work Batman: Ego published over 15 years ago today and then followed up by his popular and critically acclaimed work on Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score and The Spirit. Even after 15 years, Darwyn’s design for Catwoman is still the one used today in both comics and inspired the look for Catwoman on the hit TV show, Gotham.
An Eisner-award winning artist and accomplished writer, Darwyn has been a much-loved and respected member of the comics community. Oh putain, ça c’est un coup dur ! Darwin Cooke, c’était un concentré de talent. L’élégance de son trait couplé à ses exceptionnelles qualités de narrateur faisaient de lui un artiste d’exception. Le monde la BD perd beaucoup.

Un peu étrange comme sensation. J’avais justement acheté le TPB de The twilight children qui venait de sortir la même semaine et en parcourant les pages, je me disais combien son dessin clair et magnifique est apte à illustrer tous les registres, en espérant secrètement voir Darwyn Cooke œuvrer plus souvent sur des projets atypiques de cet acabit (il avait refusé de participer à Multiversity parce qu’on lui proposait un numéro au contexte super-héroïque résolument rétro, un genre qu’il avait déjà largement exploré par le passé).
Pour les amateurs, je rappelle que DC a sorti en fin d’année dernière un très beau livre consacré à Darwyn Cooke dans sa collection Graphic Ink, THE DC COMICS ART OF DARWYN COOKE, qui compile en plus de 400 pages nombre de ses travaux de couvertures, d’histoires courtes et d’épisodes épars réalisés pour l’éditeur:

En allant sur le scannblog de Gel Apeldoorn, j’ai appris le décès de Mell Lazarus, auteur de plusieurs strips. Il en parle mais également des dessins de presse de Lararusstrips.
Né en 1927, et décédé le 24 mai dernier, Lazarus est connu pour plusieurs strips, dont Miss Peach et Momma. Il est également l’auteur de deux romans.
Pour la petite histoire, la forme de Miss Peach, à savoir une seule case étirée à l’horizontale et présentant une scène dont les différents personnages parlent à tour de rôle jusqu’à la chute finale, placée à droite, a servi d’inspiration à un strip de Stan Lee et Dan deCarlo, Willie Lumpkin.
