INFINITE CRISIS: FIGHT FOR THE MULTIVERSE (Abnett / Coll.)

L’éditeur DC Comics ajoute un nouveau titre hebdomadaire à son cheptel digital inspiré par le MMO Infinite Crisis: Fight For The Multivers****e. C’est le scénariste Dan Abnett qui est chargé de raconter le rassemblement de héros venus d’univers DC très différents (désignés par les termes Gaslight, Atomic, Arcane, Mecha, Prime et Nightmare). Lorsque le Batman Prime enquête sur un meurtre inhabituel qui le mène à une porte multidimensionnelle, il doit par s’allier avec le Green Lantern d’Arcane, le Robin cauchemardesque et bien d’autres pour sauver le multivers.

Carl Potts et Szymon Kudranksi (Spawn) s’occuperont de la partie graphique des premiers numéros. Ci-dessous, les couvertures des deux premiers numéros réalisées par Gene Ha et Dan Panosian.

In fact that’s as important, if not more important, than the relationship to « Infinite Crisis » and other classic books. I want that kind of scope, but thinking about it in terms of « Elseworlds » books – some of which I wrote back in the '90s! – it feels with each world I go to, with each alternative character I come to, I try and think about what it would be like to write that character on their own, in an « Elseworlds » story to get the measure of them as a character on their own. Then informed by that character, place them into context of everything else that’s going on, because almost every episode is a wonderful mix of different worlds and different characters. It’s as much of the case of Prime Batman meets Atomic Wonder Woman because that’s interesting – but the way their expectations of each other and the expectations of the Wonder Woman or Batman that they know can be confounded or given major insight is really good fun! So « Elseworlds » is there, very much so, and I think quite deliberately. It’s not the first Elseworld we go to – it’s not the first alternate world we go to – but the setting for part of the first main arc is Gaslight Gotham. That was a deliberate nod to the fact that there is an Elsewhere book, « Gotham By Gaslight, » because I wanted that sense of starting off in the most iconic place.

Way back at the very start we didn’t know how long the series would run, so we opted to create a very definite arc across 24 parts so that there would be a proper, solid, satisfying end. I hate it when things are elect hanging and unresolved. So, yes, that was deliberate punctuation. But knowing, later, that we would get to continue, I was able to wave in a few extra strands that could pay off when the story continued and build the grand work for the crisis as it played out.

First, there’s his speech pattern. Dan’s done a terrific job of setting him squarely in the Victorian-based Gaslight world and this sets him apart from any other incarnation of Luthor we’ve ever seen, creating a wholly unique character. I also like his ambiguity. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? We still don’t know. He’s very unctuous in how he addresses all the other characters, but you get the impression that this might be him feigning being humble. There have been enough glimpses that he’s really a bit of a badass, in spite of his deferential manner. He fights these universe-threatening menaces right alongside the super powered characters, using only his intellect and his steampunk technology and he never flinches.
