JOHN FLOOD #1-6 (Justin Jordan / Jorge Coelho)

Berry is part of his attempt to get ready for it – someone who can kick some ass if the need arises. But one of Flood’s biggest problems, and one that’s not immediately obvious, is that being locked in a constant dream state has made Flood really disconnected from his own life.

He knows, intellectually, that his life is real and stuff is really happening, but since he’s locked in this state where he can’t really tell the difference between what’s really real and what his brain is throwing at him, he emotionally views the world as a dream.

That has a lot of subtle effects, but one of them is that he doesn’t really feel the danger he’s putting himself – and for that matter, Berry – in. So he’s underestimating just how smart and dangerous a person who has killed thousands of people over twenty years without getting discovered let alone caught must be. This will, of course, eventually bite him in the ass.
What’s to Love: Justin Jordan exploded onto the comics scene just four short years ago with The Strange Talent of Luther Strode and caught everyone by surprise. Now he brings us John Flood, a series that combines the metaphysical with the procedural in a way we think is really fresh. Joining him is Jorge Coelho, whose fantastic work on Polarity and Sleepy Hollow made him a BOOM! favorite. Perfect for fans of Desolation Jones and Sherlock Holmes.
What It Is: As the result of a government experiment, John Flood no longer needs to sleep, but now he’s in a constant dream state and sometimes can’t tell what’s real and what isn’t. A side effect is that he sees patterns and makes connections no one else can, which serve him well in his new “career” as a makeshift PI. Together with a burly ex-cop, Flood begins to investigate when he “sees” one man responsible for thousands of unsolved murders, but now he himself has caught the killer’s attention…

In John Flood, we see his hallucinations so that’s a new challenge, seeing through the eyes of a sleep-deprived person. I changed the inking technique a bit for that effect, going more for line work with hatching (more or less distorted depending on the context), alongside standard line work and shadows for reality. Also layouts, layouts, layouts, it’s all in the layouts; I spent a bit of time in there.

Attending Sean Murphy’s Apprenticeship also gave me more tools to develop John Flood with more confidence.
