C’est bien joli. Et le pitch arrive au moins à me tirer un « mouais pourquoi pas ». Mais sortir ça en parallèle de la Harleen de Šejić, dans la même collection, interroge.
C’est donc ça , j’ai lu les crédits trop vite j’ai cru qu’il faisait que la variant cover. Y’en a vraiment qui aiment ce style ? J’ai jamais accroché à mayhew
Là, il pousse la technique super loin, et si c’est super maîtrisé, c’est complètement froid. Il a perdu le charme dont il faisait preuve il y a quinze ans. J’aimais beaucoup les couvertures de She-Hulk, par exemple, qui naviguaient déjà dans ce photo-réalisme, mais avec une note d’humour et de décontraction.
Accessoirement on a là l’antithèse complète du #1 de la Harleen de Stepan Šejić — les sorties en parallèle ne pouvant qu’inviter à la comparaison, et à mon sens celle-ci ne tourne pas à l’avantage de la présente version. Là où Šejić reste fidèle à la tradition concernant le parcours des persos, mais creuse l’aspect psychologique pour humaniser au maximum son héroïne, Kami Garcia veut tout réinventer de fond en comble mais n’arrive qu’à une collection de clichés, sur des personnages qui à ce stade pourraient porter n’importe quel autre nom*. Sur le principe, je n’ai rien contre un elseworld ou assimilé qui rebat les cartes pour proposer une approche alternative, mais encore faut-il que le résultat le justifie.
*Notons d’ailleurs au passage qu’on n’aura aucune explication sur le changement de nom de Harleen Quinzel devenue Harley Quinn, transformation qui semble ici dépourvue de toute motivation.
Les planches en couleurs de Mike Mayhew ne « fonctionnent » absolument pas à la lecture, et si Mico Suayan s’en sort mieux en noir et blanc, je ne qualifierais pas non plus le résultat de renversant. La principale qualité de la partie graphique, en même temps que son principal défaut, sans doute, est d’être au diapason du ton du scénario de Garcia, lequel aligne des considérations grandiloquentes sur la psychologie des serial killers semblant toutes droit sorties de séries télé de la fin des années 90 — type Profiler ou autre Medium.
Šejić, du reste, bénéficiait d’un format rallongé ; ce n’est pas le cas ici et Garcia, Suayan et Mayhew doivent faire avec les 28 pages standard… Ça reste toutefois une piètre excuse pour l’impression de vide ressentie une fois arrivé à la fin du numéro : ce #1 est de la pure mise en place, donne à peine l’impression de lancer une intrigue, et malgré ses prétentions révolutionnaires dégage un parfum déjà daté… d’une bonne vingtaine d’années, en fait.
