MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #0-12 (Fred Van Lente / Smith)

A travers la campagne « What is the Key ? » l’éditeur Dynamite Entertainment annonce l’arrivée des personnages « Gold Key » Turok, Doctor Spektor, Solar, et Magnus dans son catalogue. De 2009 à 2011, les propriétés Gold Key étaient publiées par Dark Horse sous l’égide du responsable Jim Shooter qui préféra la sureté d’un éditeur bien établi plutôt que de relancer Valiant comme il s’y était engagé.

Les hostilités débuteront dès févriers avec la nouvelle série « Turok: Dinosaur Hunter » par Greg Pak (Action Comics) et Mirko Colak, suivie en mars par « Magnus: Robot Fighter » de Fred Van Lente (Archer & Armstrong) et Cory Smith qui voit Magnus, le combattant élevé par un robot pour devenir le libérateur de la race humaine, rattrapé par la technologie de pointe alors que les différences entre les Robots et les Hommes s’amenuisent.
Puis « The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor » par Mark Waid (Daredevil) en avril, et enfin « Solar: Man of the Atom » de Frank Barbiere (Five Ghosts) en mai. Les dessinateurs des deux dernières séries n’ont pas été annoncés.

La publication en « canon » des nouvelles séries « Gold Key », réalisées par des auteurs « éclectiques » de la bande dessinée américaine, ressemble fortement à la politique établie avec succès en 2012 par Valiant, ex-détenteur des droits de Gold Key dans les années 90.

« Magnus » is unique as a science-fiction property that was big in the '60s and the '90s – the creators of those strips couldn’t have really conceived of the technological advances we have now. We basically all walk around with supercomputers in our pockets that we can use to access data, take pictures and speak to each other. It was sort of a necessity to update Magnus beyond him karate-chopping the heads off '60s robots. That was very exciting; to conceive of a completely different science-fiction world in which machines have complete control, in the sense that not every intelligent machine in « Magnus » is a robot.

They all exist in the same “universe” or timeline. Not to give too much away, but you’ll see Turok is very different from the way we see history, and Magnus has a pre-timeline that leads into the book. Solar and Spektor take place in the present, and one of the books ties them all together. It’s not necessarily a traditional crossover, but it’s in a very organic way. Me, Cory and Nate have a very distinct beginning, middle and end in the first year of Magnus. Magnus is thrust into this world where he’s been raised by a robot to fight robots.

Lors d’une interview consacrée au site CBR, le scénariste Fred Van Lente a dévoilé la couverture de « Magnus Robot Fighter #1 » par Gabriel Hardman, et trois pages réalisées par le dessinateur Cory Smith:

Basically, in my version, Russell Magnus is a gym teacher in a small town where there are robots. The town is run by this artificial intelligence called 1-A, whom Russell treats as a father because it raised Magnus from when he was a kid. One day, after a violent attack by seemingly hostile robots, Magnus wakes up in this sprawling megalopolis called « North Am » which basically constitutes the entirety of the North American continent. It’s sort of the exact opposite of Mega City 1 in « Judge Dredd. » Where that city takes up the entire continent, this was designed by robots who edited down the continent. They deleted all the space they thought were the inconsequential parts of North America…you know, like fields. [Laughs] So now you could walk from New York to Chicago in about six hours.
