À l’occasion de ses 20 ans, le label Marvel Knights fera son come-back à l’automne.
Donny Cates (une des jeunes étoiles montantes dans l’organigramme Marvel, dont le contrat d’exclusivité chez eux vient justement d’être renouvelé) est chargé de superviser l’ensemble des titres et de choisir les équipes créatives (Matthew Rosenberg, Tini Howard et Vita Ayala ont d’ore et déjà été annoncés).
Le one-shot inaugural MK20 #1, écrit par Cates et prévu pour novembre, servira notamment à célébrer l’anniversaire du label. Le seul visuel révélé à ce stade se résume à une illustration promotionnelle de Deodato Jr., mettant en avant les personnages phares de la première vague de titres de 1998 (Daredevil, Punisher, Black Panther et Karnak, un représentant des Inhumains).
Plutôt qu’une véritable résurrection du label, le revival annoncé de Marvel Knights se limitera finalement à une mini-série en six numéros, centrée sur les personnages emblématiques de l’imprint (à l’instar du titre de Chuck Dixon). Travel Foreman et Niko Henrichon s’occuperont des deux premiers numéros tandis que Geoff Shaw et Jae Lee s’occuperont des couvertures (les variantes en ce qui concerne le second).

Quel étrange OVNI que cette mini-série, qui fête les vingt ans du label Marvel Knights en réunissant les personnages ayant eu des histoires éditées dans ce cadre. Donny Cates ouvre le bal en centrant le tout sur Daredevil, évidemment, mais brasse déjà plusieurs autres personnages, en s’amusant visiblement avec ces héros et vilains sans mémoire.
C’est rigolo, surprenant, mais encore très obscur. J’ai peur que tout ça n’aille jamais très loin, et j’ai surtout peur que l’ensemble fasse artificiel dans la réunion de ces personnages. On voit que Marvel Knights a fini été le foyer de beaucoup de titres très diversifiés, finalement au-delà des personnages dits urbains du début (parce que bon, Inhumans & Black Panther, déjà…).
Bref, un début solide pour une mini-série surprenante et rigolote… mais je crains que ça ne décolle pas. A voir, Cates fait un bon boulot ici, et Travel Foreman est meilleur qu’à l’accoutumée, moi qui goûte si peu son style généralement.

Bon, cette étrange se poursuit, mais l’effet de surprise n’est plus là ; l’ensemble est donc moins punchy, moins percutant, et un peu moins inspiré.
Matt hésite et doute de ce qu’il croit savoir, comme il ignore pourquoi il parle au fantôme de Karen. On embraye ensuite sur Frank et Bruce, le premier rencontrant violemment Elektra - et ça dure longtemps, avant la réunion avec Murdock et une petite révélation finale ; mais ça tombe à côté.
Ho, Matthew Rosenberg livre des dialogues classiques, sans brillance mais avec sérieux. Donny Cates doit surveiller tout ça, mais l’ensemble avance peu, et ça n’a franchement rien de vraiment intéressant. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi Marvel a voulu ou validé ce projet, pour l’anniversaire de la gamme : c’est tellement éloigné de ce qu’elle fut que ça n’a pas de sens.
Bref. Ca se lit, c’est correct et sérieux, mais sans génie et sans brillance. Niko Henrichon livre des planches bien fichues, cohérentes, mais elles aussi sans fougue.
C’est sympathique ; mais complètement oubliable.
