I definitely thought of « Demerits » and « Honors » as one big arc, and while they didn’t vary in some ways, the big thing here was that we focus on that triangle of Fortunato, Ian and Akiko. I like that we told their stories together because throughout the book we’ve set up that their fates are intertwined. It was a good thing to set them all together, and then #38 is its own creature.

Well the new arc, which is called “Assembly”, is about putting together the very last pieces of the story that is really going to power it for the next eight to twelve issues. You’re absolutely right, though, that Jade’s kidnapping and the student council election are the primary drivers are for what’s to come. There are other ingredients in terms of the science fair and the things that are coalescing and are about to connect and it’ll lead to the most explosive story that we’ve done since Woodrun.

Well this will be my sixth year drawing this and I don’t want to be drawing it the same way I drew it six years ago. So what I wanted to do was to evolve my style as we go along and kick off the new year with some different clothes. I mean they have to do laundry some time, ya know? So it was a fun way to explore some different looks for them and do some portrait shots of them.

The biggest things Morning Glories taught me were gratitude and efficiency. No one had ever read my books before Morning Glories, and our fan base exploded, and I’d never experienced anything like that. I learned that almost by chance, you can create something that resonates with people, and they will dedicate themselves to it. I sincerely love our readers, and try to make them feel awesome online or when they come for autographs at conventions. They made my career possible! With regards to efficiency–I learned how to speed up during our run, and not dwell on or overdraw things. I learned what kinds of scenes were easy to draw (talking heads) and which were difficult (crowds), and to pace myself accordingly.
