PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #297-313 (Zdarsky, Ryan / Kubert, Frigeri)

Peter Parker is back in the friendly neighborhood, but he’s persona non grata as far as the NYPD is concerned! It’s the ol’ switcheroo as we here at the House of Ideas ask that classic question – PETER PARKER: THREAT OR MENACE?!

Interview de Chip Zdarsky sur le site SyFy Wire :

You and Adam relaunched Spectacular Spidey earlier this summer and really took a ‹ back to basics › approach with it. Will that type of storytelling change at all with the Legacy roll-out?

I feel like our book was conceived with the ideas around Legacy already in mind, so we’re continuing the story and the feeling we’ve started with. Though, the beginning of Legacy’s roll-out does happen to coincide with our ramping up of danger for Spidey, so maybe part of Legacy is making the lives of our heroes really hard? I don’t know. Nobody at Marvel really talks to me.

The ‹ Parker luck › is such a big part of the character. But Chip, I like what you said once that what you love about Spidey is that both Peter and Spider-Man are never both on a roll at the same time. If Spidey’s not a target of the cops, then it’s Peter’s turn to be struggling. Why do you think that is so key to the character?

A hero without hardship isn’t super interesting, but a hero CONSTANTLY under hardship can be draining. The narrative balance between Spidey and Peter really helps to keep things interesting.

Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man is a very different type of comic. Will your books interact in any way?

Not in a “MAJOR EPIC CROSSOVER COLLECT ALL PARTS” kind of way, at least for the time being. But what happens in each of the titles affects the status quo in the other. When Dan kills Aunt May and brings back Uncle Ben as a gun-toting vigilante this fall, I’ll make sure to reflect that in Spectacular.

What characters, classic and new, can we expect to see moving forward? Any storylines you can tease?

I don’t want to get TOO specific, but there are a bunch of classic villains popping up for an epic showdown with Spidey, so he’ll need help from some old friends. After that, we’ll be dealing with a pretty intense global threat with roots in Spidey’s far past. It’s the biggest thing I’ve had the chance to write, so I’m pretty excited, especially to see how Adam draws it all!
