For months, Marvel Comics has teased that IMPERIAL, the four-part epic by visionary writer Jonathan Hickman and superstar artists Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini, would usher in a new era of cosmic storytelling. Just now at the Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, fans learned exactly what that meant with the announcement of five all-new ongoing series spinning out of IMPERIAL later this year!

In addition to first looks for upcoming IMPERIAL WAR one-shots, Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, VP & Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, and writer Stephanie Phillips revealed the first wave of ongoing series set in the new intergalactic landscape created by IMPERIAL: PLANET SHE-HULK, NOVA CENTURION, BLACK PANTHER: INTERGALACTIC, EXILES, and IMPERIAL GUARDIANS.

All five titles are set up in the IMPERIAL WAR one-shots releasing over the next few months and begin launching in November, starting with PLANET SHE-HULKby Stephanie Phillips (PHOENIX) and Aaron Kuder (DAREDEVIL) and NOVA: CENTURION by Jed MacKay (X-MEN) and Álvaro López (PREDATOR: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD). Both Phillips and MacKay are also writing their series’ respective IMPERIAL WAR one-shots.

PLANET SHE-HULK is a solo series unlike any other in She-Hulk’s history as she uses her brains and brawn to maintain order on the savage planet of Sakaar. NOVA: CENTURION represents a new era for one of Marvel’s oldest and most iconic space-faring heroes as Nova does whatever it takes to keep the memory of his people alive amidst the corrupt system now governing the stars.

Je n’attends pas un titre pérenne mais j’espère au moins que ce serait plaisait à lire.

Ce qui semble se dégager avec ce lancement d impérial, mais peut-être plus globalement dans un rapport d hickman à la continuité, c est une forme de droit d inventaire.

Il regarde les statuts quo qui l intéressent dans le passé et il les réinstalle comme il le souhaite.

Notamment son invention d’une planète Sakaar 2 et le retour du Hulk affilié.

Alors je ne sais pas si Ben va nous proposer une critique mais je suis aller voir du côté US et à ma grande surprise le premier numéro est plutôt bien accueilli.

Bon numéro ; je continue de lever les yeux au ciel face aux facilités déployées pour arriver au contexte de cette série, mais Stephanie Phillips la lance bien. L’on voit ainsi Jennifer forcée de rester sur Sakaar pour remplacer Hulk, qui déjà remplaçait son fils Hiro-Kala tué durant Imperial. Elle essaye de gérer entre les intrigues de cour, les complots et les coutumes étranges, alors qu’elle a une piste pour trouver un vaisseau et fuir, entre deux bagarres rituelles et quelques bons mots.
C’est sympathique. Stephanie Phillips gère bien la voix-off de She-Hulk, et elle caractérise Sakaar efficacement, me rappelant un peu la période de Daenerys en dehors de Westeros dans Game of Thrones. J’aime bien, ça se lit bien, mais Aaron Kuder a du mal avec quelques personnages et notamment She-Hulk, qu’il « tient » mal je trouve ; dommage.

Bon lancement d’une série dont les bases sont quand même bien loupées dans Imperial.

Je continue de tiquer sur la facilité du retour de la planète Sakaar, avec cette deuxième version sortie du chapeau de Jonathan Hickman, mais ça se lit bien. Stephanie Phillips gère bien sa série, avec une She-Hulk clairement paumée dans le microcosme, les règles et les coutumes de Sakaar, où elle veut appliquer ses préceptes personnels qui ne sont pas adaptés. L’on voit ainsi plusieurs acteurs se lançant dans le jeu politique, avec un bourrin qui se déclare roi, un ancien gladiateur aimé du peuple et de la fille d’un bourgeois qui veut s’y opposer, et Jennifer qui comprend que l’assassinat de la fiancée du bourrin est un complot. Elle s’allie au gladiateur, mais le roi bourrin a des gros bras avec lui.
C’est bien. J’apprécie que le soin soit mis sur la population de Sakaar, avec un côté Game of Thrones qui fonctionne bien, avec une Jennifer paumée mais caustique, qui veut respecter les locaux mais ne peut pas tout supporter. Aaron Kuder gère bien aux dessins avec une grosse aide de Scott Hanna.

Ça se lit bien, malgré la facilité au démarrage.

DEADLIEST THERE IS? A merchant’s trusted assistant is dead, and Jen has been framed for his murder! Can Sakaar’s justice system prevail, or is Jen staring at a long-term sentence?

Au moins, on garde une charte graphique malgré l’absence de Kuder.

Solide. Stephanie Phillips enchaîne, avec Sakaar constamment en proie à la violence et Jennifer qui tente de stopper le pire et de s’expliquer sur son pacifisme neutre. Le roi auto-proclamé est amené à croire que sa fiancée a été tuée par le meneur des gladiateurs, sur révélation d’un marchand fourbe qui n’accepte pas que sa fille couche avec ce dernier. Les gladiateurs sont tués et leur chef va être exécuté, mais la fille va alerter Jennifer pour qu’elle tente de stopper tour cela.
Bon, bagarres et complots en milieu médiéval fantastique, avec Jennifer sarcastique, paumée et voulant bien faire au milieu. Ça fonctionne plutôt bien, sans me passionner mais sans me lasser, avec des dessins corrects de Emilio Laiso.

Divertissant.
