Ah tiens, j’aimerais bien savoir lesquelles.
Brian knows I have a soft spot for Gale and I think he put him in tiny athletic shorts to indulge me. Most of this came from the script, actually- down to the headband and tearaway shirt, which has the logo of some alien band. Apparently Gale and Izabel have the same taste in music?
Anyway, a character’s clothing is usually one of the first things I’ll design, since most of them don’t change their outfits very often. I get very nervous about getting it right because I don’t know how long they’ll be stuck in the same clothes. So for the main characters, the clothes have to be versatile and work in all kinds of situations, from sitting around in the ship to battling monsters. I like to do layered outfits so that they can take pieces off for visual variety, or to show that they’re feeling comfortable. I also don’t put the main characters in anything too crazy or sci-fi because I think their simple outfits make them more relatable.

« Saga » is really the story of just one character, Hazel, so Fiona and I discussed having each new hardcover feature an original image of Hazel at a different stage of her life. For this first collection covering Hazel’s infancy, a breastfeeding image inspired by our very first cover seemed like a slam dunk, especially with the backdrop of Landfall and Wreath, two warring worlds that are actually as dependent on each other as Hazel is to her mother.
But Image warned us that we might get pushback from retailers and our distributors, especially because some stores out there have apparently already stopped displaying our first trade paperback because some customers complained about that comparatively tame image of Alana breastfeeding her baby. I think that’s insane, especially given how many covers out there literally feature severed human heads, but so it goes.
Anyway, Eric Stephenson was concerned that we might be limiting our audience with this kind of cover, and we had a lot of back and forth with him until he finally said, « You guys know I’m not your boss, right? You can do anything you want at Image, I just wanted you to be aware of the climate out there. » Which is one of the countless reasons why Image is the best publisher in the world.
Brian K. Vaughan : “After fifty-four issues and over 1,200 consecutive pages of sequential storytelling together, Fiona and I have decided to take an extended break before we eventually reunite with Saga #55. And unlike our usual three months of ‹ Vacationanza › between arcs, we plan to pause publication of this series for at least the next year.”
The choice obviously wasn’t a decision we took lightly, but Fiona and I I feel a responsibility to keep making the very best comic we can, and we both agreed that he only way to eventually finish the epic saga we set out to tell was with this one significant… let’s call it… Intermission!”
Description: At long last, Hazel and her star-crossed family are finally back and here to kick off a new story arc! So, where the hell have they been? As thanks for fans’ endless patience, the Saga team is proud to return with a double-length issue – 44 pages of story for the regular $2.99 price point – without variant covers or gimmicky renumbering. Just more pulse-pounding adventure, heart-wrenching character drama, and gloriously graphic sex and violence, as Saga begins the second half the series and the most epic chapter yet!
