Ils ont raison de préciser qu’il y a des chapitres qui n’ont jamais été réimprimés. En effet, mon édition (plus toute jeune) est en un seul volume, je crois. Je n’ai qu’un souvenir bien lointain de ce récit, mais ça annonçait déjà l’aspect « film catastrophe » des intrigues de Batman dont Cataclysm et No Man’s Land sont le sommet, et c’est l’un des derniers grands moments du règne de Denny O’Neil. Personnellement, j’aime bien, y a plein d’auteurs que j’apprécie (Dixon, Moench, Nolan…) et ça gère bien le Bat-univers.

Tiens, des épisodes inédits. Ils ont fait le coup sur Superman / Wonder Woman (j’y vois pour ma part un signe de la précipitation avec laquelle le Nioufiftitou a été conclu, mais c’est peut-être de la malveillance de ma part, et peut-être que ces épisodes en rab ont été prévus de la sorte depuis longtemps). Et c’est du Tomasi / Mahnke, en plus, donc ça donne envie. En tout cas, le triptique écrit par Tom Taylor est tout à fait comestible.

Excellent. Visiblement, le cross-over « Gorilla Warfare » (impliquant la série Green Lantern de Gerard Jones, qui mériterait elle aussi une réédition) est contenu dans le recueil, ainsi que plein de trucs annexes, jamais repris dans les éditions précédentes. Alors selon moi, le véritable début de l’excellente période, c’est là. Byrne, dont les histoires étaient sympa mais sans plus (les planches sont jolies et les apports, à savoir Lois, Luthor, la place de Sup dans la communauté héroïque, sont intéressants, mais les histoires sont d’une mollesse saisissante), vient de partir, et des tandems travailleurs et ingénieux s’installent. Roger Stern, notamment, qui apporte un véritable bon sens à cet univers, mais aussi Ordway qui travaille (en solo bien souvent) sur plein de choses. La gestion de Mike Carlin est exemplaire, et tout ce petit monde sait tirer parti des dernières étincelles de Byrne. À redécouvrir d’urgence, afin de trouver un Superman déchiré entre son environnement humain et sa dimension cosmique.

Ça, c’est très joli, mais y a un parfum de « so what ». C’est violemment frappé de nostalgie, notamment à l’égard de la série télé des années 1970, et ça tente de redéfinir des personnages et la place de Diana dans un univers faussement black ops. À y regarder de plus près, c’est également un décalque de propositions faites par Pérez ou Jimenez. Qui plus est, ça arrive après l’excellent période Rucka, qui a souffert des cross-overs à rallonge mais qui avait le mérite de pousser plus loin la version de Pérez (l’ambassade, tout ça…). Cette version de Heinberg donne plutôt l’impression d’un retour en arrière pas du tout productif.

Voilà un travail que j’aime beaucoup dans la carrière de Peter David, un auteur que j’aime bien, sans être admiratif (j’aime beaucoup la plupart de ses Hulk, ses Aquaman, plein de Supergirl, ses Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man… mais je déteste la plupart de ses vieux Spectacular et ses X-Factor récents me tombent des mains, sans que je sache pourquoi). En général, je ne raffole pas de ses intrigues purement super-héroïque, préférant ses petits épisodes d’émotion, ce genre de choses. Et là, avec ce groupe prenant les allures d’une famille reconstituée dysfonctionnelle, je trouve qu’il s’en sort pas mal du tout.
