SPIDER-GWEN #0-24 (Jason Latour / Robbi Rodriguez)

Gwenom is a story I do have a lot of ideas for. And maybe we’ll make our way there eventually. But it’s definitely not something we’re going to force.

We do have a big new guest star in the first arc, a new twist on a very popular and familiar hero that I won’t spoil. I know that doesn’t sound like I’m giving you much but hey – what if I told you we might meet the Osborns? Cause there are a couple of dudes in this book who look a lot like those guys.

Sauf sur Wolverine & The X-Men !

c’est sympa ses pantoufles

Ah oui tiens _
One of the things we wanted to do was create some villains for Gwen that weren’t necessarily direct corollaries to stuff Peter Parker had to deal with, so using somebody like Daredevil or Frank Castle seemed like an interesting way to introduce a street level New York element into the book and keep it a little grounded. Because like you said; it’s a little absurd and a little out there in a lot of ways, but I think that underneath it all there’s a grounded street level almost noirish story going on. I always joke that this book, and a lot of my books, are me trying to come to terms with Frank Miller. [Laughs]

It’s a bit like an episode of « The Twilight Zone, » come to think of it. It’s just an attempt to look for windows into characters that allow you to investigate what’s universally powerful about the questions their stories pose. And, of course, the new context allows you to look at it with new eyes. That and, well, Earth 65 is our little strange vantage point on things that happen here in real life as much as anything. The Stacy’s story, and what that’s about, is something I’m wrestling with in real life.

I can’t spoil anything, but what makes this universe different than others is that she’s already aware there’s a 616, and has the potential to bounce back and forth. It’s not a thing that characters like Ultimate Spider-Man, for instance, were designed for from the start. And that makes her unique. It’s a little more akin to DC Comics’ Earth 1 and Earth 2, where Superman knew there was another Superman.

spider-man-and-spider-gwenSo yes, she’s always going to work best in a world without Peter Parker. But that doesn’t mean that she can’t work in a world with him. And that’s something I want to play with eventually. People have a lot of assumptions about how the modern Peter Parker views our Gwen or vice versa, but we haven’t really had a lot of breadth to get into that.
