STARFIRE #1-12 (Conner, Palmiotti / Emanuela Lupacchino)

Moi, j’aime bien Spectre Soyeux.

We didn’t want to take on Starfire. [laughs] What happened was: we didn’t ask for Starfire. They called us and said, “What do you think of Starfire?” Amanda was like, “Oh! I remember the Wolfman/Perez run!” She had a good memory of her. I was like, “She was the orange girl who flies around.”

We were both talking about it, and they said, “Well, would you be interested in doing a Starfire series?” We needed to think about it, because we need to think about who she is and if she’d be right for us. Amanda already knew everything about Starfire, which was an advantage for us. I started reading the old stuff, which, as it turns out, I had read when it first came out.

And then we both read the New 52 stuff, and decided yeah, if we’re going to do it, we should do an amalgam of who Starfire is. Not necessarily follow any of it right down to the letter, but get to the heart and soul of who she is, which is an alien coming to earth trying to blend in. Once we figured that out, and how we could package it to DC, we pitched it and they liked it. We got lucky!

My background is a bit weird. I used to work in a research lab, I’m a biotechnologist and my job was mainly based on working on microorganisms and DNA until six years ago.

I realized that I loved art much more and tried to do it for life. I went to a school for three years where I learned how to draw comic books. When I started the first lesson, I suddenly realized that I was way far happier working on art than doing research.

Yeah, I used to read the New Teen Titans back in the day when Marv Wolfman and George Pérez were working on it. She was a very emotional being. When she was joyous, she was incredibly joyous. And when she was angry, she was furious.

I figured that would always come up, no matter how she was feeling. If somebody was feeling sad, she would emphasize with that person and it would just happen tenfold in her.

So yeah, I see her as a really, really emotional character.

And empathy’s a nice trait for people to have — the understanding of what somebody’s going through. And her trying to blend in, it’s almost hyper-sensitive at that point, because she’s trying to feel what other people are feeling to read the situation.

Of course Stella even starts to tear up. It also makes sense in the scene, I think.
