What we’re going for is making each title independent somebody could read just one title and enjoy it. But they’re also interlocking so if someone chooses to read all four books in the Superman group, they’ll get a bigger, richer picture. It’s been a challenge but I think we’re pulling it off. We’ll see.
The way this current storyline, Before Truth, fits in with all the other Truth stories is in the title. It happens before what happens in ACTION, before what happens in BATMAN/SUPERMAN, and before what happens in SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN. All three of those books are set in Superman’s reality. What John and I are going to do is show how we get to that new reality.
Honestly, the trepidation I had about getting on the character was completely taken away with these changes. Nobody worries about Superman doing the same old same old and being too perfect, etc. This was a nice variation of that. I’m so happy that the suits, for lack of a better term, allowed us to play with it and here we are. Although Geoff is a suit and a writer at the same time. [laughs] We had an “in.” Taking this opportunity and going with it and running with it are two different things. You can take a good idea and turn it into a bad one if you don’t have talent in front of it. That’s what the writers are. That’s what Gene is. The ideas are one thing but moving them around and playing with them, the way this is going to be, is fantastic. I’m very impressed with the direction of the character now. I’m glad to have been a part of it.
INTERVIEW DE GENE LUEN YANG ET JOHN ROMITA JR.
What I’ll say is this — it’s a big deal. Right? It’s a big deal to reveal your friend’s deepest truth, your friend’s deepest secret. And for all of us, when we do these big things, there’s a complexity of motivation that comes behind that decision. So we’re hoping to bring that complexity out within the storyline.
We’re hoping that it will be both surprising and satisfying when it comes out.
But if readers want to know what Lois is thinking, and why she did what she did, they’ll have to check out the book.

That was the idea from the get-go, of the new power. It’s not just a manifest visual, it changes him personally. So that’s part of this. It’s all attached.
I embrace that. I jokingly said once, when somebody asked me my opinion of Clark Kent, I said, he’s boring. He’s dull. We’ve got to put him in Brooklyn and give him a personality. And I was joking around. And they took it to heart and they tried to make differences in him. And I embrace that. I think it’s great.
I like that it even lets him have a couple sips of light beer and get drunk.
But yeah, I embrace the change, and it definitely changes Clark’s personality. And I look forward to that.

When we expose our friends’ deepest secrets, and it happens, there’s a complexity of motives that comes with that. We’re hoping that when folks are reading the issues, they’ll see that complexity and understand Lois’ motives.
One of the most awesome things about the reboot of the DC Universe is that we get to see that Lois can stand on her own as a character without the romantic involvement of Clark. Because there are these two attractive people, there is an underlying tension there, but that’s not what defines them.
She should find somebody else, and Clark should get jealous – and that’s the way it should be. She should have no interest in Clark. Everybody assumes that these two characters are going to get together, and that’s counter to what I think that we should be doing.
I was around for Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen, and I did look at that. I even looked at the documentary online where they talked to all the creators involved in that particular era. I read a book by Glenn Welden called Superman: The Unauthorized Biography, and he gives a great overview of the Man of Steel’s history from beginning to end.
His book in particularly convinced me that Superman is such an old character with a long legacy that aspects of him that will continue to fluctuate. They’re almost like pendulums that are constantly swinging.
One of the things is that his power set has gone up and down throughout his history. Another thing is whether he identifies more as Superman or more as Clark Kent. That goes back and forth.

The bad guy in issue #42 is revealed as an organization called HORDR.
I grew up in the Silicon Valley. I still live in the Silicon Valley. I majored in computer science. My first job was as a programmer. So I feel like I’m familiar with the information technology sector, and the information technology culture.
What HORDR is is me taking the darker side of the industry and condensing it into a single criminal organization. In the book, we describe it as a cross between a tech company and a gang.
And the leader, I thought of him as kind of an evil Mark Zuckerberg. I use the word evil because, unlike a lot of people, I don’t actually think Mark Zuckerberg is evil. So our character is an evil version of him.
As the storyline goes on, this tech company gang will have a continuing presence.
Truffes ?
Jim, sors le batteur. J’ai encore gagné.
The way the story is ending up is less than what I would have wanted. I personally don’t think that she should just fall in love with the guy or swoon over him the way that everyone wants her to do. And that may or may not happen. I’ll leave that to be a surprise. But I think that as a modern everyday female – especially a strong woman like Lois Lane and a beautiful woman at that – she shouldn’t just fawn over him. Especially after this New 52 setup and now with this, discovering what he is and that he basically has been lying to her. She doesn’t just have to fawn over him. It works out being a really well done way of handling it. She maintains her strength and the explanation as to why she does what she does is very well done. But I would have gone in a different direction emotionally with the two of them.
The very first promotional sketch I ever did was so bad. I had changed the face a little bit — it wasn’t good enough — and interestingly enough, that first poor image got onto the internet. And I got such hate mail over that that I couldn’t even get a chance to explain, that was just the very first thing I ever did! Calm down! I made a mistake!
And then I did another version, and Dan DiDio said, « Straighten his nose out! Not every character’s an Italian, Romita! Give him a straight nose — this is Superman! »
So it was growing pains with the character. And I laugh now in retrospect. But yeah, I had to adjust a little and learn that the character had to look a certain way, but without copying anybody.
