Tynion has said he spent about two and a half years pitching and convincing DC, specifically EIC Marie Javins, to greenlight the crossover. Once approved, it became a collaboration that reunites Tynion and Dell’Edera, the original Something Is Killing the Children creative team. for a story that blends the dark, existential horror of classic Swamp Thing with the visceral monster-hunting action of the Slaughterverse. It was publicly announced at New York Comic Con in October 2025 during a Boom Studios panel celebrating the publisher’s 20th anniversary.
Tynion has described it as a standalone story set primarily in the Something Is Killing the Children universe. The emotional core involves two brothers who are big comics fans:The older brother loves horror comics and has a large Swamp Thing poster on his wall. The younger brother prefers superhero comics and is terrified of his older brother’s horror books. That childhood fear manifests as a living monster in the shape of something very familiar, a Swamp Thing-like entity. Erica Slaughter, the series’ central monster hunter, becomes involved to stop it. Tynion has emphasized that there are deeper, more metatextual connections beyond the poster-inspired tulpa/manifestation, and that « an essence of the true Alec Holland » will appear. He has called the story deeply personal and a tribute to his lifelong love of DC horror comics.
