Eisner Award winning writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, Thrillbent) and Emmy winning writer/artist Dean Haspiel (Billy Dogma, HBO’s Bored To Death) are teaming up to launch a brand new series – THE FOX. Taking place in the Red Circle universe, this exciting creative team will deliver an innovative, action-packed superhero story starring the fabled pulp hero.
This thrilling new addition is a shake up to the Red Circle lineup. The previously solicited New Crusaders: Dark Tomorrow will receive a new release date in early 2014. The critically acclaimed New Crusaders series received high praise and year-end “best of” acknowledgements, dubbed « one of the most enjoyable and surprising books on the stands » and response to THE FOX will no doubt echo that sentiment.
The first volume, New Crusaders: Rise of the Heroes, is now available for order in Previews. In addition, this summer’s forthcoming New Crusaders: Legacy TPB features both new and iconic stories including Alex Toth‘s run on The FOX, and contributions from comic book legends Steve Ditko, Carmine Infantino, and more.

« The New Crusaders » established that a lot of the original Mighty Crusaders, the parents of this new era of Red Circle, were slaughtered and the offspring are charged with picking up the proverbial pieces as mentored by the original Shield. I see The Fox, who was in Japan when most of his comrades were killed, as a kind of uncle who has one foot out of the superhero door but keeps getting dragged in because he’s a freak magnet and he’s trying to be responsible. He already walked away from his estranged daughter once and he knows he can’t ever do that again. If given the chance, I want to explore his role as a possible mentor, especially since he’s got two very special kids and a wife who likes to dress up and play hero, too.
He’s the son of the original (and we all know how I enjoy legacy characters!). Paul Patton, Jr. doesn’t have any super-powers per se, unless you count the fact that he considers himself a « freak magnet » for all the strange circumstances that seem to befall him. But he is athletic and whip-smart, and boy, can he take a beating.

Part of what inspired me was to tell a classic pulp story, but the consequences would be kind of inspired by Apocalypse Now and The Island of Lost Souls, aka The Island of Dr. Moreau. When we meet The Fox, he is kind of iffy about being The Fox. What we posited here is he is quitting. He wants to focus on his family and have a nice domestic life and focus on some of the issues of being a father and husband and having a day job. And then the kind of job he has, photojournalist—what does that mean in 2013? If we have a chance to do a second series, that is something we will deal with.
