Mary Marvel deviendra la « Nouvelle Championne de Shazam » dans une mini-série en 4 numéros imaginée par la scénariste Josie Campbell et le dessinateur Evan « Doc » Shaner.
Most heroes would be distraught, but not Mary. It’s finally time for a voyage of self-discovery as she prepares for her freshman year of college and a civilian life. But nothing is ever truly normal for this young hero, because she’s just been chosen as the new champion of Shazam! (At least according to a talking rabbit sent by her estranged brother Billy.) Will she embrace the power? Or will it die alongside this world’s hope of survival against the mysterious magical forces waiting to take control?

« It’s been so long since she had her own book, since before she was a DC property. We’re hoping to have the fun and the creative energy behind so much of the early stuff that Binder did, but bring that to a more modern audience and try to make it more relatable to kids or young adults today. »

Mary Bromfield has always struggled to determine who she is outside her family…kinda hard to do when you’re all superheroes!

Sympathique.
Josie Campbell et Doc Shaner proposent un lancement mignon et agréable, avec une bonne caractérisation d’une Mary qui prend « enfin » son envol, en quittant la maison pour l’université. Le contact avec ses colocs est intense, mais ça va… jusqu’à ce qu’un lapin lui parle (!) pour lui dire que Billy, coincé au Rocher d’Eternité, « voit » de futures menaces, et lui confie seule le pouvoir de Shazam. Mary refuse, puis doit agir, mais est ensuite interpellée par la police… car ses parents adoptifs ont disparu !
C’est sympathique, oui. C’est divertissant, bondissant, agréable. Ca donne le sourire, ce n’est pas méga ambitieux mais ça fait bien le job, et c’est une bonne chose de mettre Mary ainsi en avant. Ca ne révolutionne rien, mais ça se lit bien, et ça apporte une réelle fraîcheur.
Bien sûr, le trait de Doc Shaner aide beaucoup, avec son style solide, poétique et inspirant, dans cette approche de ligne claire faisant référence au passé.
Un bon début, pour sûrement une bonne p’tite saga, qui se sera fait attendre.

Sympa’ et gentil.
Josie Campbell continue sa petite saga, avec Mary qui revient à la maison pour enquêter sur ses parents adoptifs enlevés. Elle se confronte à sa fratrie adoptive troublée, et elle essaye de gérer au quotidien, avec aussi ses nouveaux très grands pouvoirs et ses responsabilités.
C’est simple mais efficace. Josie Campbell écrit bien, écrit intelligemment, et son portrait de Mary est mignon. Doc Shaner livre des ambiances superbes, une belle atmosphère poétique et prenante.
Rien de révolutionnaire, mais du mignon et réussi.

C’est beau.
Oh, le fond est plutôt sympathique, avec une Mary paumée, en pleine enquête, critiquée par les médias comme « Lady Shazam », qui doit gérer sa famille recomposée après la disparition de leurs parents adoptifs. On a l’avancée des investigations, on croise Oncle Marvel, on a un affrontement psychique, et ça fonctionne bien.
Mais, au-delà du scénario efficace mais sans entrain de Josie Campbell, je retiens l’extrême beauté et l’élégance absolue des planches de Doc Shaner. C’est juste superbe, dans un style absolument maîtrisé.
