Après la mini-série American Vampire : Survival of the fittest, le scénariste Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire) et le dessinateur Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus, Joe, l’aventure intérieure) referont équipe pour une maxi-série de science-fiction se déroulant en milieu sous-marin.
The wake devrait s’étendre sur 12 épisodes et décrira un monde post-apocalyptique dans lequel une découverte majeure mettra au jour une mythologie inconnue.

Je sais pas ! Je trouve ça maîtrisé dans son style caractéristique, lisible (le storytelling me semble bon), précis, fouillé et détaillé sans que ça fasse fouilli. On sent de la personnalité et du taff dans ces pages ! Et cette ambiance !

Alors, qu’est-ce que j’ai bien pu raconter pour expliquer ça ? Petit florigère extrait de mes critiques précédentes :
Sur John Constantine, Hellblazer: City of Demons :
« Côté dessin, Sean Murphy fait sans surprise du très bon boulot. C’est original, nerveux, emprunt d’une certaine folie tout en étant très maitrisé techniquement. L’encrage, en particulier, est splendide. »
Sur Joe the Barbarian :
« Tout ça est sublimé par le dessin remarquable de Sean Murphy. Il arrive à donner une véritable âme à la maison de Joe dans le monde réel, avec des perspectives étirées à la mesure des hallucinations de Joe. Quant au monde fantastique, il lui donne l’occasion d’être créatif à souhait. C’est riche, dynamique, avec des planches superbement composées et un encrage splendide. »
Sur Punk Rock Jesus :
Que je compare à Joe : « Sur ce terrain, je donnerai l’avantage à Punk Rock Jesus, non seulement parce que le noir et blanc va comme un gant au trait de Murphy, mais aussi parce que l’artiste se lâche nettement plus. Ses designs sont extravagants (quelles motos de folies !) et il y a plus de rage dans la mise en scène. Vraiment, je me suis régalé encore une fois. »
Je dois avouer que j’aime moins pour l’instant ce dessinateur que je m’y attendais au moment où j’ai découvert ses noirs et blanc pour hellblazer.
Très chargés ses dessins laissent pourtant des arrière-fonds souvent vides, peut être du fait du contraste.
Et il manque en fait une certaine rondeur au trait pour que j’accroche pleinement à sa profusion.
mais je me jette quand même sur toutes ses bd en noir et blanc
