THE WHITE SUITS #1-4 (Frank Barbiere / Toby Cypress)

Le scénariste Frank Barbiere (Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray, Blackout) signe chez Dark Horse sa nouvelle mini-série originale « The White Suits » en collaboration avec le dessinateur Toby Cypress.

La série suit un mystérieux gang, les « white Suits » apparus pendant la Guerre Froide, dans leur prise de pouvoir à l’intérieur du milieu criminel New Yorkais. Dans leur sillon, l’agent du FBI Sarah Anderson recherche son père, et le mystérieux Prizrak, ancien membre de l’organisation souffrant d’amnésie, cherche à se venger.

La série est librement inspirée des courts segments « The White Suits » réalisés par Frank Barbiere pour l’anthologie « Dark Horse Presents ».

La lecture de la récente série Doctor Solar m’a donné envie d’en savoir plus sur le travail de Frank Barbiere, que je découvre dans le désordre. Cette mini-série semblait donc idéale : pas trop longue, déconnectée d’autres œuvres…
Hé bien donc, c’est pas mal, White Suits.
Bon, cependant, on sent que ça aurait pu être contenu dans un plus grand nombre d’épisodes, six aurait été un bon chiffre. Là, on note quelques problèmes de rythme. Deux premiers épisodes qui prennent leur temps à installer des choses intéressantes, un troisième entièrement constitué d’une grosse baston, un dernier fort bavard afin d’expliquer les tenants et les aboutissants de la chose, le tout avec des ellipses un peu violentes entre chaque chapitre. Donc ça sent soit l’improvisation (« zut, ils ont accepté le pitch, va falloir l’écrire, et je suis déjà en retard »), soit la compression (« comment ça, quatre épisodes ? ils m’en avaient promis six »). Ou peut-être simplement que ça sent les débuts de carrière.
Le suspense est pas mal. L’intrigue en soit est assez convenue, encore une histoire de complot qui m’a rappelé, notamment, The Homeland Directive. Rien de formidable, mais un gros film d’action rondement mené.
Graphiquement, c’est Cypress. Je ne connais pas bien, mais je visualise essentiellement un boulot en noir et blanc avec un trait rond et souple, un joli travail (pinceau, sans doute). Là, il s’amuse avec la couleur, pour un résultat assez étonnant. C’est pas toujours foncièrement lisible, l’excès graphique nuisant parfois à la lisibilité, mais ça a du chien.
Bref, pas mal, musclé, avec plus de personnalité que pas mal de produits Dark Horse (une boîte qui a parfois la fâcheuse manie d’édulcorer les prestations de ses auteurs de passage).
Pas révolutionnaire, mais si vous aimez les gros thrillers musclés, c’est votre came.
