THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #1-45 (Kieron Gillen / Jamie McKelvie)

« Basically, it’s a superhero comic for anyone who loves Bowie as much as Batman. » - Kieron Gillen.

When I started pulling together the cast, there was a time when I thought the whole cast would be women. I got to seven characters, and there was a bloke in there. I was thinking perhaps I’d end up doing that… at which point I got one that inspired me. It’s a 7/5 split, in terms of gender. In terms of the pantheons, the further I got into my research, I realized I was basically doing a god per pantheon, and should lean into that. In the end, certain areas have more representation – I’ve treated different periods of Greek religion as different pantheons.

However, It’s not actually eleven gods. It’s twelve. I didn’t mention Ananke, as she’s an exception, and key to the book’s mythology. Probably a little early to talk about her.

But it’s twelve, because twelve is one of those exciting magical numbers. There’s also practical elements – lots of room for heroes and villains, and internal drama. It’s not a team book. It’s a cast book, with Laura tying it all together.

There’s been considerable research, but not in the way of Uber and Three. They are hard historical books. Here, I’m much more interested in cultural history and interpretation. Fundamentally, I’m interested in Ideas. I don’t even want to mention which books I’m leaning on at this point, as I want people to enter the world as cleanly as they can – but they’ll end up expressly referenced in the story itself, so don’t worry.

A lot of it was wanting to mix it up in terms of its sources. I wanted to have some gods with a certain degree of – for want of a better phrase – Star Power, but ideally those which weren’t over-exposed elsewhere. I mean, I wasn’t going to use LOKI or THOR or something, as that’ll inevitably take the gods to be commentary on the Marvel Universe rather than anything in an of itself. I was especially careful with pantheons that are still worshipped in an extensive way today. There were some of my favorites I just wanted to get in too.

I’m also being a little coy about what Gods are in it. The “which god is going to emerge next?” is totally a big part of the book.
Fraction’s immediate response to reading the first issue was that it reminded him of the move between the first volume of “the Invisibles” and the second, with “Phonogram” being the equivalent of the first. I can see that. Similar concerns as always, but more sex, violence and glamour. There are worse fates in the world.

There’s certainly a lot of 90s Vertigo in there. I’ve had a few people reference “Preacher” with it, which surprised me – it may be from the storytelling of it, I suspect. Before people had actually read any, “Sandman” turned up a bunch, for obvious reasons.

“The Invisibles” changed my life. All the things I reference – from pop music to pop comics to actual real grown up stuff – in “The Wicked + the Divine” changed my life. I’m not going to hide that. I’m going to show you where all that art changing my life got me.

The idea to have an icon for each god was Kieron’s, though the design and concept of each one is mine, based on his character descriptions and of course the mythological basis for each. I then decided it would be cool to adapt the icons for each era – so these 1920s icons have an art deco feel to them. I like the idea that if we go back into pre-Christian eras, I could design icons that look like runes or signs carved into stone, or wood.

They also allow us to impart story information. As you can see here, all but four icons are identical skulls. What does that tell the reader? Combined with the following pages, you can figure it out.
The mystery is solved. But does pop-god Lucifer like the answer? The answer is a word that rhymes with ‹ Go ›, ‹ Blow › and ‹ Pro ›.
You can break colors down into a lot, but the three simplest things would be: hue, value, saturation. And once you understand what those do and how those work you don’t have to use those words in your reviews, but knowing how they work will help you understand color in your review and why things are working. Like, “Oh things are lighter or darker,” which would be value, but there’s also color temperature so that has to do with a hue like blue or red. All of those choices do something to a panel and it’s worth discovering what those things are to truly understand how their combinations work together, or not, for that matter.

I feel like anyone interested in color theory in comics should just read on color theory, not just think about color theory in comics. In art school I took a color theory class and learned in color theory class how to do what I do now. All of those books are still useful to me. Really, just take a book out from your bookstore (or Amazon to not sound like an old man) and take some time to read a little about it, and it will open you up to more ways to see color.
INTERVIEW DU COLORISTE MATT WILSON
The basic plan is for around probably thirty to sixty issues. My gut feeling will be about forty. That covers this incarnation of gods, as in their two years, but you know the concept was every ninety years, so we can go back – we want to do probably a whole arc in previous generations. And that will be well down the line. But it could go longer.

The fact that the concept is as big as it is, is in the classical Vertigo ongoing model, that model of ongoing is about the idea that, « Yes it’s a long story, yes we know the end, yes we know is structure, » but you also use it as a device to be able to grow and respond to things you are interested in, and use it to explore what you care about. And when we were making up « Wicked + Divine » it’s kind of like everything I’ve ever loved.

I don’t know if it was a challenge, but it was certainly fun. I mean, we had a very clear idea of who each god was, and the influences they were influenced by. I think it was pretty solid in my head from the beginning of reading the character and what they were about. Like the design was there, pretty much straight away.

Yeah, obviously Lucy has gone through about four or fives suits so far. You know they’re more like pop stars than super heroes so they’ve got a style, but not a one costume. So it’s been fun coming up with different ones every time. We went to see Kate Bush a couple of weeks ago, at least two of the outfits in issue #5 are very Kate Bush influenced.
