With The X-Files back in the news, Dynamite Entertainment is also revealing that it has acquired The X-Files comic book license, returning the series to the world of comics for the first time since IDW Publishing did new comics set in Season 10 and 11 (before those seasons then actually happened for real on TV).
The new The X-Files series will star Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, and it appears as though the series will tell new untold cases that the two FBI agents dealt with between episodes of the original series, which ran for nine seasons between 1993-2002 (and then for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018).
Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher, said about the new project in a press release, « The X-Files is the next jewel in the crown for us at Dynamite in working with Disney and entering 20th Century territories, hot on the heels of Kelly Thompson’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel epic. Multiple generations have loved following the cases of Mulder and Scully, and they translate absolutely perfectly to the format and serialized nature of comic books. We’re working to make sure longtime fans and newcomers will love the new stories, and can’t wait to share more! »
The writer of the new series is longtime The X-Files comic book writer, Joe Harris, who wrote the aforementioned IDW Season 10 and 11 series. Harris, in a press release, noted “The X-Files has always been sacred to me," said writer Joe Harris. "From my own early TV fandom on Friday and Sunday nights to getting to work on one of the greatest supernatural thriller/science fiction franchises in history, the further adventures of Agents Mulder and Scully have occupied a very special place in my head and career. I am beyond honored to write them and I am absolutely over the moon to work with Dynamite on this new series.”
Harris is joined by artist Riley Brown. Above you can see Brown’s design sheets for Mulder and Scully, as he tries to evoke the feeling of the two famous agents while preserving David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s likeness rights.
The X-Files has been a big part of the world of comics ever since the original series began, with Topps Comics having a long run on the series in the 1990s, and then IDW did its stint. Dynamite is now stepping up to give The X-Files a new home.
The X-Files is set to be released this winter, and Dynamite will reveal more information about the series in the near future.
