Autant, après l’enthousiasmant numéro « Rebirth » introductif, le premier arc avait été une cruelle déception, en particulier du fait de la volonté d’Abnett de coller au plus près au prétexte idiot de Geoff Johns pour tout le reboot (oh, toutes ces « subtiles » allusions… http://www.bdgest.com/forum/images/smilies/bdgest.gif ), autant avec le nouvel arc (depuis le #7), on semble enfin passer à autre chose, et pour l’instant, c’est une franche réussite. Si Brett Booth pouvait arrêter ses jeux de cadrages bizarroïdes, ce serait encore mieux, mais en l’état, c’est à nouveau une chouette lecture.
Accessoirement, ça n’a pas été posté ici, mais je suis fan de la couverture alternative du #8 par Nick Bradshaw :
Je serai moins dur que toi concernant le premier arc, auquel je trouve deux qualités principales, liées à ce que te déplaît.
D’une part, c’est un récit entièrement tourné vers l’action, et j’apprécie assez cette approche, qui met en avant l’aventure, le drame, le suspense, bref tous les ingrédients qui m’ont fait venir à ce genre.
D’autre part, le fait de centrer Wally West au cœur de l’intrigue permet de répondre à la question posée par Dick à la fin de Titans Hunt, et d’éclaircir un peu ce que Geoff Johns a imposé au chausse-pied dans DC Universe Rebirth. Avoir plus de temps et de place afin de détailler ce qui se passe, en mettant en avant le point de vue de Wally et en annonçant un peu les conséquences sur l’ensemble de l’univers, c’est pas si inutile.
Je retrouve les qualités qui me font apprécier le boulot d’Abnett depuis quelques années (depuis ses Nova et Guardians of Galaxy, en fait), à savoir sa capacité à ne pas faire traîner inutilement les intrigues, à mêler l’intrigue locale avec les grandes considérations de l’éditeur sans donner l’impression de céder au diktat, et à privilégier l’action. Ici, il trouve même le moyen de glisser quelques sub-plots annonçant sa seconde intrigue.
Le seul reproche que je ferais au premier arc, c’est qu’il est trop long. Six épisodes (sept en comptant le chapitre introductif), c’est beaucoup, voire beaucoup trop pour le retour d’un vilain certes intéressant, mais dont le plan demeure assez simple. Plus ramassé, ça aurait gagné en tension. Je fais un peu le même reproche à Titans Hunt, que j’aime beaucoup (malgré la valse des dessinateurs), mais qui aurait pu être plus court.
Mais globalement, malgré mon retard de lecture, j’aime beaucoup ce que fait Abnett sur l’univers DC en ce moment. Et j’espère qu’il en fera plus et surtout qu’il touchera des personnages plus imposants.

C’est clair…le premier arc était plutôt bon et je pense que je continuerai si Urban propose la suite en « Récit Complet », mais ce sera plus pour le boulot du scénariste…car ça pique toujours autant les yeux, du Brett Booth…

Bof, c’est l’école Wildstorm : plein de traits avec des cases « in your face » tout le temps. Pas du tout ma came, mais on ne peut pas reprocher à Booth de ne pas être généreux.
Moi, là où son dessin m’agace, c’est que justement il ne sait pas se calmer. Toutes les planches doivent contenir des cases de guingois, des pans inclinés, une composition frénétique. Il ne sait pas utiliser un découpage calme pour les séquences calmes. Par exemple, là, Donna et Wally discutent, et on voit bien qu’il fait des efforts en termes de gestuelle et de visages… mais quel besoin a-t-il de composer ainsi sa planche, avec des cases en biais ? Pourquoi pas quelque chose de plus posé, avec des interclasses verticaux et horizontaux, et des vignettes rectangulaires ?
En bref, il ne sait pas doser le rythme.
