Bon, enfin un Valiant Beyond correct ? Oui. Après le creux (et polémique) Bloodshot, le vide et décevant Shadwoman, le basique et bordélique Harbinger, voici The X-O Manowar, qui est correct… sans plus.
Steve Orlando lance ici sa série dans un monde post-apocalyptique, où Aric de Dacia, avec ses deux mains, une armure et des rêves d’une « reine », pour laquelle il a commis des actes atroces dans l’espoir de voir enfin son visage, se refuse encore à lui. Il croise une famille attaquée par un gang, les Earthborn, et il protège celle-ci en les tabassant, puis en laissant partir l’un d’entre eux pour raconter ce qu’il a vu. Aric amène la famille vers un sanctuaire, où le contact est rude avec le gardien cyborg, mais ça s’améliore. Il ne reste pas, cependant, mais est enlevé la nuit par les Earthborn, et amené à leur chef qui provoque la terreur absolue en chacun de ses ennemis, pour les soumettre…
Bon, c’est correct. Ça flirte avec un Mad Max light, ça sème de vagues graines sur un monde détruit, la mystérieuse reine, un Aric paumé mais qui cherche l’honneur… c’est correct, oui. Mais pas emballant, pas entraînant, pas enthousiasmant, avec rien sur l’armure, et la présence de ses deux mains qui surprend. Guillermo Fajardo livre lui de jolies planches, efficaces même si elles manquent un peu de dynamisme.
Un lancement en mode « minimum syndical », mais c’est déjà énorme vu le reste des autres Valiant Beyond.

Bordélique, bourrin mais pas désagréable. Steve Orlando joue à fond la carte de la copie de Mad Max avec un seigneur de guerre terrible et terrifiant qui envoie ses « novices » prouver leur valeur en tuant Aric, qui erre dans ses délires. Il est libéré par ceux qu’il a rejeté avant et ils tuent tous ensemble les novices, sauf leur monture qu’il faut sauvegarder. Et ils laissent un message de provocation à l’ennemi…
Bon, c’est bien bordélique quand même. Le scénario alterne entre grosses bastons fluides et gores et apports intéressants mais confus sur ce monde et son organisation. Il est difficile de « sentir » X-O Manowar ici, et si c’est en soi agréable comme surprise, ça reste chaotique dans l’exécution, avec plein de personnages annexes peu passionnants. Même si Guillermo Fajardo propose de jolies planches.

Ça s’améliore, réellement. Steve Orlando maîtrise mieux son étrange délire post-apocalyptique, avec ici la communauté qui a sauvé Aric des tarés se faisant appeler Earthborn, alors qu’il avait rejeté initialement cette communauté pacifiste, discute de l’inclure ou non. Aric explique son origine, classique hormis qu’il a obtenu l’armure en confrontant son porteur et la combi’ l’a choisi, lui. Il pousse la communauté à se rebeller contre les Earthborn, alors que ceux-ci attaquent plus tôt que prévu. Une connaissance est passée d’un père mourant à une fille volontaire par procédé télépathique, mais Aric est bloqué par le chef des Earthborn, dont le visage provoque la terreur absolue, et Aric enrage que sa « Reine », présente dans l’armure, l’abandonne.
Bon, c’est pas mal en soi. Je reste surpris par le projet, la tournure, l’approche post-apo’ assumée, qui à mon sens correspond étrangement avec X-O Manowar. Mais ça se lit, les éléments disséminés sont délirants mais fonctionnent, Aric est correct en soi, et les dessins de Guillermo Fajardo sont jolis, détaillés et dynamiques.

Brutal mais efficace. Steve Orlando achève sa première saga avec l’attaque des Earthborn sur le domaine des Punx, et l’armure d’Aric est figée par l’effet de peur provoqué par Typhon, le leader ennemi. Mais Aric refuse de céder et se libère de l’armure pour aider Destruction et les autres protecteurs des Punx. Il confronte Typhon et Aric lui arrache le crâne parce qu’il maîtrise sa peur, alors qu’un mercenaire extraterrestre le suit pour l’appréhender pour ses crimes spatiaux. Les Earthborn fuient, Aric reste avec les Punx et Destruction lui dit le nom de sa Reine qui est l’armure, et surtout qu’elle est en train de mourir après tout ça…
Bon, c’est bourrin mais ça se lit bien. Le scénario fait le job dans un Mad Max simple et sale, mais c’est efficace et les pièces du puzzle se lient peu à peu. L’ensemble tient beaucoup aux dessins solides et détaillés, même dans le gore, de Guillermo Farajo, mais c’est correct.

Pas mal. Steve Orlando enchaîne après sa première saga, avec ce système étrange Valiant Beyond où chaque nouveau story-arc a une renumérotation au #1 avec son titre. Là, Aric comprend que sa Reine illusoire était l’armure dont il a découvert le nom, Shanhara, mais celle-ci est sous l’effet de l’attaque de peur de Typhon. Il plonge en lui-même et dans l’espace mental partagé avec Shanhara pour la libérer de ses peurs et des siennes. Ils s’allient et échangent comme un couple alors que Shanhara veut poursuivre son travail pour rendre Aric digne… alors que le chasseur de primes extraterrestre qui traque l’armure a ordre de tuer Aric pour la récupérer.
C’est pas mal, oui. Le scénario plonge bien Aric dans son espace mental, avec clairement une relation cheloue avec l’armure. Pourquoi pas, c’est dérangeant mais plutôt intéressant, avec aussi des dessins solides de Diego Giribaldi & Tomas Aira.
