In Vanish, Oliver Harrison was a mythical hero who slayed the greatest threat to his realm before even hitting puberty. But that was then.
As an adult, Oliver leads an average cookie-cutter suburban life—aside from the fact that he’s mentally unstable, massively paranoid, smokes like a chimney, and gets blackout drunk every night to hide from his horrific nightmares. Will the arrival of a superhero team called the Prestige prove the madness isn’t all in Oliver’s head? And what about all the epic fantasy crap from his childhood?
Stegman added: « Vanish is the most exciting thing I’ve drawn. Doing an Image comic has always been my ultimate goal as a creator and we’ve pulled out all the stops to make this special. Donny’s and my goal with this project is to create something that we could never do at Marvel and, well…We’ve succeeded at that I assure you. »

Bon, pitch moyen pour ce premier épisode.
On est dans un monde où la magie est présente. Le héros est un ancien élève d’une école de sorcier (qui tient plus de l’établissement de formation du Cycle d’Ender de Card que de Poudlard, mais bon) qui a sauvé le monde (en recourant à une tricherie un brin badass). Depuis lors, il déprime, il boit, tout ça. Les sbires du méchant qu’il a descendu (méchant qui donne son nom au titre, incidemment), après s’être enfuis, sont revenus en se faisant passer pour des super-héros. Et notre héros doit reprendre son costume.
Cet épisode d’introduction laisse un sentiment paradoxal : c’est teigneux, un brin vicieux, ça tort certaines attentes. La distribution des informations est pas mal (ça arrive dans le désordre, ça fait sens au fil de la lecture), et pourtant, le gros de l’épisode étant consacré à un flash-back, on a quand même une impression de lourdeur démonstrative. Et il reste peu de place pour creuser le personnage, dont la déprime semble bien artificielle : il vit dans une maison qui a l’air bien proprette par rapport à la ville mise en scène précédemment, il a épousé une autre étudiante qui s’est distinguée par son caractère inflexible, donc il a tout pour être heureux, qu’est-ce qu’il a à chouiner ?
Là-dessus, Stegman me semble un peu décevant. Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi. Peut-être l’encrage. Il me semble s’orienter vers un traitement un peu Capullo / Miki des ombres, avec quelque chose du Van Sciver de Cyberfrog. Autant dire que ça m’emballe un peu moins que d’autres choses qui ont précédé dans sa carrière.
Bon, je vais lire le deuxième épisode, par curiosité.

Le deuxième épisode continue à afficher des qualités et des défauts. Mais surtout des défauts. Grosso modo, il ne se passe pas grand-chose. On a une voix off qui meuble des séquences longues et creuses (genre : Oliver, le héros, bondit sur les toits et traverse la ville puis se change en civil). On a une rencontre avec l’un des autres élèves qui désormais est prestidigitateur de scène, puis une rencontre avec Elynor, la compagne du héros, puis une dernière séquence montrant le Prestige, le fameux groupe de faux héros annoncé au premier volet. Voilà.
Oliver est à nouveau présenté comme un loser qui fait les mauvais choix (alors que, paradoxalement, lui, il fait des choses). Les dialogues mettent au point des choses relevée plus haut (genre : Dustin explique à Oliver qu’il n’a pas à chouiner parce que sa vie est quand même très bien), mais globalement, l’ensemble est assez vide et décompressé.
Qui plus est, la narration n’est pas soignée : une scène importante implique un anneau qu’Oliver aurait emprunté… sauf qu’il n’est représenté que dans la case concernée, et absent des autres vignettes, y compris celles qui sont à côté. De même, deux détails sont évoqués (l’emprunt de l’anneau et le rêve montrant le retour du méchant) et j’ai beau chercher, je ne vois pas où ça a été raconté. Le seul anneau qu’Oliver récupère ostensiblement appartient à un adversaire (dans le premier numéro). Quant au rêve, est-ce la scène d’explosion dans la première livraison ? Mais celle-ci ne fait-elle pas partie du flash-back ?
Grosso modo, et si l’on est de bon poil, on peut sans doute se dire que certaines choses seront éclairées dans les épisodes à venir, à la manière de la déprime injustifiable du héros qui génère un maigre dialogue intéressant dans le deuxième chapitre. Si l’on est de mauvais poil, on se dit que tout cela est écrit avec les pieds. Et la question importante est de savoir s’il y a un editor dans la série. En tout cas, son nom n’apparaît pas dans la page de crédit.
Bref, deux épisodes qui donne l’impression que l’écriture est improvisée au fil de l’eau, que les dialogues sont rédigés au doigt mouillé, et que la série démarre quand même assez mal.
