La série X-Men '92 se poursuivra en 2016 avec la même équipe scénaristique, composée de Chad Bowers et Chris Sims. Le dessinateur Scott Koblish est quant à lui remplacé par le jeune dessinateur Alti Firmansyah.

Pour rappel, X-Men '92 est une résurrection, sur papier, de la célèbre série animée des années 90. Le nouveau titre verra l’équipe rebâtir l’école Xavier au sein de sa propre dimension après les évènements de Secret Wars.

On top of that, it’s important to us that X-Men ’92 look, and feel like a real X-book, if that makes any sense. I think it’s easy to see us as sort of the goofy, nostalgia kick, or the successor to the animated series, and we’re delighted to be all of those things and more, but it doesn’t change how we’re approaching the series. In our minds, X-Men ’92 is an epic 10,000 years in the making, and we’re not letting a little thing like taking place on an alternate Earth or whatever dissuade us from putting the entire Marvel Universe at risk!

There’s obviously going to be an element of nostalgia to the book, when you’re working with something that’s deliberately trying to echo a very particular era, but for us, it’s less about taking things back to the ‘90s and covering the Greatest Hits than it is about trying to figure out what would happen if that team never stopped. Because of that, we’re bringing in a lot of the stuff that you’ve seen in the 21st century, characters like the X-Statix or hints at later storylines, and trying to figure out what they would’ve looked like if they’d been created with that ‘90s aesthetic instead. Also, one thing that Chad and I realized when we were working on it was that the ‘90s X-Men never really had the “school” aspect - there was Generation X, of course, but the core team were never teachers. So the first thing we do - before page one, even - is open up the Xavier School For Gifted Youngsters to bring in even more characters!

The scene in the miniseries where Cassandra Nova refers to Psylocke and the rest of X-Force as « incurably violent » was one of my favorite parts to write, so I’m really glad that we got to pull them in for the ongoing. As for the learning period, I think you’ll see in the first arc that they’re a little more… direct at dealing with their problems than the other X-Men are, and they don’t really trust anyone outside of the inner circle.

And basically, to Psylocke and Bishop « inner circle » means each other, exclusively. They have their reasons for joining the X-Men, and they genuinely want to do good and protect both mutants and humans, but Storm’s going to discover pretty quickly you can take them out of X-Force, but you can’t take X-Force out of them.

When we got the greenlight for the ongoing series, we certainly had a long talk about what we wanted for the project and where we saw it going, but tone was never a big topic of conversation. I know writers say this all the time, but we honestly just write the kind of book we’d like to read, and hope it works. And in the end, let’s face it — the other X-books do such a good job of telling stories with a slightly darker and more contemporary tone, if we’d done the same kind of stories, just with different costumes, it would’ve been real easy to get lost in the mix. When we were first hired for this book, it was little more than a name, and we’ve been extremely lucky in that we’ve been allowed by Marvel to essentially do whatever want to do with a comic that could’ve very easily just been a one-note rehash of a bunch of X-Men/Magneto fights. But instead, we chose to make it a celebration of everything we love about that era of X-Men comics! A 20-page X-Men party every month!

I think our primary goal when we’re writing is to make a book that’s fun to read — fun for us, fun for you, and fun for Alti [Firmansyah] (and Cory [Hamscher]!) to draw. Every time we send in a script and hear that she can’t wait to draw a certain scene, or that the editors can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s done, it really feels like we’re on track with something that readers are going to respond to.
