Walt Simonson : "This is the cover for the first issue of the FF that I wrote and drew. (I wrote the previous three issues but had other assignments to finish before I could start on the FF.)
I had been writing the Avengers and lining up some longer storylines but was ultimately unable to do them. I got off the book and five seconds later, Ralph Macchio who had been my Thor editor, for the second half of my run on that book, offered me the FF to write and draw. I jumped at the chance. After finishing off the first three issues of just writing (some big cross-over event about the Mutant Registration Act or something), I started on my run. I modified some of what I had planned for the Avengers and turned them into FF stories. That’s partly why Iron Man and Thor guested in my run in the beginning. And of course, they also in the story because they were two of my favorite Marvel characters anyway.
One note - if you go back and look at the printed version of the cover, you’ll see that I forgot to put a black into the front of Thor’s outfit. There’s a little ‹ x › there to indicate that the space should be black, but I missed it. However, some time after I got the cover back and noticed the missing black, I filled it in to set my mind at ease."

Marvel Comics will be marking the occasion of Disney’s 100th anniversary with a special monthly Disney100 Variant Cover Program featuring Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and more.
The variant program in honor of Disney100 will celebrate Marvel’s past, present, and future through the classic « What If… » lens with a reimagining of Marvel’s most classic comic book covers. These moments include Captain America assembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers #4, as well as the groundbreaking debut issues of Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk.
With 12 covers in total, readers can look forward to a new Disney100 variant cover (also available in Black and White versions) hitting stands each month of 2023 at local comic book shops. The variant covers will be found on select upcoming issues of Amazing Spider-Man starting with Amazing Spider-Man #17 on Jan. 11.
