That’s one of the big things, how [the characters] change. That was what Mark the editor and Rafael and I did just this past month in August; we decided we would re-read the entire series and really make a very strong case to each other about what the characters’ emotional arcs are throughout the 20th Century. Loosely, I know what Skinner’s is and what Pearl’s is and the big arcs, because I know how the series is going to end, but we’re being really nuanced about it. It’s not just that he’s lost and he has no frontier – how does he feel about the Vassals? How does he feel about Pearl? How does he feel about Calvin? About Felicia? All of those things really made a matrix for each to emotionally figure out the most interesting stories to tell with the characters we love so much. We really use that as the guide so it’s not, « Let’s see Haight-Ashbury this, » or, « Let’s see that. » There are things we left out that you might be surprised we haven’t done because they are big historical moments, but they are not that important to the characters, so we left them out.

The long awaited return of AMERICAN VAMPIRE is nearing. Set to ramp up in March 2014, the series picks up with our favorite vampires in the notorious 1960s. What’s in store for Skinner Sweet and Pearl Jones? We’ll have to wait and see.
« AMERICAN VAMPIRE definitely has a special flavor,” says series artist and co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. “After working daily with these characters for so long, Scott and I feel connected to them, just as if they were real people, somehow. Returning to that feels like getting back home after a long, long trip. »
« I’ve missed AMERICAN VAMPIRE so much it’s downright scary, » says writer and co-creator Scott Snyder. « In the interm, Rafa and I have planned and plotted a lot, and I think it’s safe to say that for both of us, there is no project more exciting or important than this one. We cannot wait to bring you all back to the world of AMERCAN VAMPIRE this spring. The best stories are coming-promise. »
Now is the perfect time to catch up on all 5 volumes of the original series and, if you haven’t picked it up yet, the recently published AMERICAN VAMPIRE ANTHOLOGY featuring stories set in the world of American Vampire, told by some incredible talent including Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon (DAYTRIPPER), Becky Cloonan (DMZ), Jeff Lemire (TRILLIUM) and Ray Fawkes (CONSTANTINE) and many more.
In the meantime, you can also check out THE WAKE written by Snyder with art by Sean Murphy (AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST) and Albuquerque joins Jeff Lemire with issue #24 of ANIMAL MAN.

One of my favorite things is how the Devil is such a big part of American folklore in a way that’s very specific to this country, both in the way he’s portrayed in music and in folktales. It’s a very different sort of wandering trickster than you see in other cultures. We’re going to try to really dig into why that is and who he is. He’s a monster I’ve been really, really excited to bring in, so he really is the keystone of almost our entire mythology in a lot of ways. He’s not just the Big Bad, he’s the Biggest Bad!

After Henry’s death, Pearl went back to her family’s farm, where she is finding out what to do with her grief and darkness. She is sheltering some lost children in her house, and we will find out that protecting them won’t be so simple.
Skinner is pretty much getting back to his roots. He was an outlaw in the past, and he is trying to somehow recreate that old west life for himself as a mercenary, riding a chopper on the roads.

The story so far…
Pearl Jones is a new kind of vampire, one of an American breed that can walk in the sun and has rattlesnake fangs. She’s beautiful and powerful – and she’s hiding from a tragic past…
Skinner Sweet is an American vamp too – the kind you love to hate. He’s good when he wants to be, but most of the time he’s downright bad. He’s Pearl’s maker, but he’s off in Mexico with an agenda of his own…
Will their two stories collide, or are they separated forever? And who is this new villain on the horizon, someone bloodier and more evil than anything seen in AMERICAN VAMPIRE before? Who is THE GRAY TRADER and what does his arrival mean for Skinner and Pearl?
Whether you’re already a fan or interested in checking out this series, the extra-sized AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE #1 is the perfect jumping-on point!

I never thought we’d actually do vampires in space. I imagined we’d do something in the '60s that had to do with the Cold War and nuclear annihilation. But when I got to the arc, I knew we were going to do Area 51, and I knew we’d have this weapon there that Americans had secretly been holding before the Johnson administration, in case this beast was real, in case it was under the ground. And that all the nuclear testing done up until the early '60s is part of that attempt to kill or find this beast.
And so the space element just came in at the last minute, as I was talking to Rafael. He was like, well, the Russians would be monitoring it with a satellite, wouldn’t they? And I was like, yes, they would.
And then I did some research into spy satellites back then, and it’s fascinating. They actually took physical pictures, and they would eject the film. And the film would come down from space, sort of with a heat shield, and a plane would catch the film or pick it up.
So I was like, there’s no way we can not use that sort of information.

We have a weird blend of the life of a virus and this whole bible that Rafa and I have of different myths and legends and folklore about the Devil and evil and the greatest embodiments of evil from different cultures. And we wanted to make something that felt like Tiamat and Satan and all of these kinds of things but it’s not. It’s something that spawned these things.
We did a lot of research when it came to cultural touchstones for figures of tremendous evil and destruction but with the science, it’s the same science that we’ve had since the beginning. And that’s this idea of infection and this idea of genealogy.

Après une longue pause, American Vampire sera de retour en 2020 pour ce qui est annoncé comme l’ultime cycle de la série, une mini-série de 7 ou 8 épisodes.
Scott Snyder :
« It’s going to be the equivalent of about seven to eight issues and it takes place in 1976. It’s got biggest Evel Knievel style stuff and it’s also got like all the paranoia of the political intrigue of the 70s, so cold war stuff. »
« And it brings us up to the present, actually, » added Snyder. « So it’s like our giant epic kind of over the top monsters all out, all monsters fight finale. »
« I hate to say it because I love all of my series that I work on, but it is kind of like home. It was my first one and it is like the tree house I go back to and be like, ‹ Oh, this is my favorite thing. › So, we’d never let it go without really sort of putting a good bow on it. »
