I think you just hit the nail on the head. This is going to hearken back to the beginnings, when it was irreverent, it was funny, it was edgy, it was something that was on the humorous cutting edge. This book is going to be funny, don’t get me wrong. This is going to be a humorous comic book. But it’s really going to hearken back, hopefully, to some really fun visual gags. If you know the early work of Archie, there were times when things weren’t necessarily even spoken, but you had that visual gag of Lodge picking up Archie and throwing him out the door. I’m not necessarily we’re doing anything like that specifically, because we haven’t even gone there yet, but it’s going to be more cutting edge and contemporary. We’re just framing right now the feel of it, and obviously Mark is going to work closely with Roberto and myself in what the exact story he is, but he gets it. He knows exactly what this should be. I think the exciting part of it is going to be that it really hearkens back to the '40s and '50s in terms of humor. Why was Archie successful in the first place? Because it was funny. And that’s what we’re going for.

We’ve no intention of going « dark » or serving an adults-only audience. That’s cheap, that’s easy, and anyone can do it. Literally, any chimpanzee with a keyboard can write, « Issue One, Page One, Panel One: Establishing shot, the fetid boys’ room of Riverdale High. Jughead pukes into a toilet, a heroin needle still dangling from his vein. » Not interested. Don’t worry. The tone will be a little more sophisticated, yes. The kids will be dealing more closely and more realistically with the kinds of problems real 2015 high school kids deal with. Tonally, if you enjoyed my work on ‹ Impulse, › you’ll like this.
The core five – Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie – will certainly be there (though some of them less directly at first, he said cryptically, as we reintroduce some of them to some of the others). And rest assured, we have big plans for Kevin and Moose and Dilton and Val and Alvin and Simon and Theodore and Flopsy and Mopsy and Cottontail and Doc and Dopey and Bashful and I swear to you, we will get to everyone, but we only have 20 pages, so be patient. We won’t let you down!

I’ve given a lot of thought—a LOT of thought—to Jughead, and while I can’t give too much away, we’ve invented a heretofore-unseen history for him that, to me, really helps me understand how someone so different from the rest of the gang is nonetheless such an integral part of the Riverdale dynamic.

We came to Kickstarter because we didn’t want to wait a few years to expand on the world writer Mark Waid and Fiona Staples were building with « Archie » #1 – we wanted it all faster, so our fans could really experience the scope and breadth of this New Riverdale.
Let’s be honest: We’re not a corporate appendage, nor are we flush with corporate cash like Marvel or DC. We’re a small operation and we have to be thoughtful and selective with everything we do. But that doesn’t mean we have to be cautious and afraid. Quite the opposite. I think the only way to get noticed in this crowded marketplace is to take calculated risks, be daring, push the envelope and – first and foremost – tell good stories. The rest is just dressing if the story doesn’t deliver. Once we knew « Archie » #1 would deliver in spades, we started brainstorming how we’d expand the line and give other talents the chance to tell stories with these characters. The lineup of talent and books blew us all away. Once the creators themselves said they were in, we were in an enviable problem: we had these books we wanted to fast-track, but we also had our own financial considerations to think about. As a company, we’re always expanding and trying new things. We’ve just launched in Wal-Mart and Target. We’re one of the first companies to embrace digital and same-day with print. We don’t just sit around. But none of that is free.
So it became a question of, do we want to play the long game and roll these out as we can, or do we want to go all in because we believe in these books? I don’t think the answer we chose is a surprise. Who better to help us build this New Riverdale than our own fans? What better endorsement can these books get than direct support from the people that will read and love these books? We would be nothing without our fans and it just made sense to have them with us from day one as we build this together.

L’éditeur Archie Comics a finalement mis un terme à sa campagne Kickstarter suite aux critiques formulées par les fans dénonçant la pratique d’un éditeur solidement implanté de faire financer la production de ses séries par les lecteurs.
We launched the “New Riverdale” Kickstarter as a unique and innovative way to celebrate the company’s upcoming 75th anniversary and to bring attention to some new titles that we are extremely excited about—JUGHEAD by Chip Zdarsky, BETTY AND VERONICA by Adam Hughes and LIFE WITH KEVIN by Dan Parent and J. Bone. We decided to dive into crowdfunding as an energetic, interactive and different method to raise money to help expedite the launch of these titles. The chance to engage with you, our fans, directly was really appealing to us, and we’re extremely grateful and honored by the support and pledges we’ve received.
While the response to these new titles has been amazing, the reaction to an established brand like Archie crowdfunding has not been. Though we saw this as an innovative, progressive and “outside-the-box” way to fund the accelerated schedule we wanted to produce these books, it became another conversation, leading us further away from the purpose of this whole campaign: to get these amazing books in the hands of fans faster than we could on our own. While we fully expected our goal to be funded, it was no longer about the books and how amazing they will be. We don’t want that. This is why we’re shutting this Kickstarter down today.
We don’t regret trying something new. It’s what Archie’s been about for the last six years. We will continue to be a fearless, risk-taking and vibrant brand that will do its best to embrace new platforms, technology and ways to interact with you, the fans. As a company, we have always prided ourselves on pushing boundaries and challenging expectations and perceptions.
The wonderful New Riverdale titles we wanted to launch will still come out—albeit not as quickly as we would have hoped had we attained the funding via Kickstarter. We believe in these books and know they’ll find an audience in comic shops, fueled by great stories and amazing creators.
We’d like to thank the great team at Kickstarter for their guidance and feedback and the entire staff at Archie Comics for their endless hours of hard work and dedication to this very special initiative.
And, most importantly, to you, our fans that pledged money to this Kickstarter—we thank you. Not only do we thank you, but we still want to interact directly with you. Your dedication, love of Archie and his friends and endless positivity are examples to all.
We would love to keep in contact with all of the fans who wanted to contribute to our project. If you were one of our Kickstarter backers, please send an e-mail to publicity@archiecomics.com so that we may gather your e-mail addresses and send you all special thank-you gifts as tokens of our indescribable appreciation.
Your support means the world to us.

Mark’s script is pretty much the basis for everything that I do. From the tone of the story to everything that’s going on in the background, it’s generally scripted. I didn’t worry too much about sticking to the house style, actually. In the beginning when I was doing a bunch of character sheets and sketches for them to look at, some were a little bit more cartoony and closer to the house style and then some were just completely my style and I sent them to Mark and to Mike and Stephen Oswald, our editor, and was like, “This is the starting point, let me know which ones you prefer, which ones to stay away from, and which ones you want to explore.” The only feedback I really got was, “Yeah, great! They’re really cool, we liked them all!” [Laughs.] I didn’t feel like I needed to stick to any house style; I thought, “Well, I guess doing my own thing will be fine. This is a re-telling, anyway.” So I kept a few little visual callbacks to the traditional design. There’s a subtle version of Archie’s weird hash marks in his hair. His plucky eyebrows, he kind of has a pointy nose, stuff like that. I tried to still make them look like themselves, but it would have taken me another two months to learn to draw them in the classic Archie style so I thought I would just go ahead and draw them in my own natural style.
