When I originally wrote the first part of this story, Wolverine was involved. This was before I knew he would be dead. I found, though, that Wolverine being removed from the comic and being removed from the story actually enabled me to focus on characters that aren’t necessarily given that much attention.

So the role I originally had planned for Wolverine became a Magneto role, which then fed into some very interesting things with Scarlet Witch as well as some interesting dynamics between Magneto and some of the other heroes, and ultimately some of the other villains.

Issue #3 is the really the big twist. If the war in the reeducation camps of Genosha is the inciting incident, then this is the payout for it where the heroes, the villains, and everybody left manage to save the day – and they also manage to make things much worse. From there, without spoiling things, the train picks up speed and starts to go a little crazy.

Like I said from the beginning, each act of this is really its own event. Each act of this is its very own thing, and each act has its own high concept that it’s operating from. One kind of feeds out from the next.

The way Rick [Remender] and I would talk about it amongst ourselves was essentially, and this is as geeky as you can possibly get, in « Dungeons & Dragons » terms. In D&D, every character has what they call an alignment on a scale of nine. You’ve probably seen those graphics on Tumblr where people take television show and movie casts and drop them into the block of the nine possible alignments.

In essence, what the Inversion does is reverse your alignment. So somebody that is a Lawful Good character will begin to exhibit behavior that is Chaotic Evil. And somebody that is Chaotic Good will end up behaving in a way that’s more Lawful Evil and so forth and so on. So it’s not as simple as good guys get bad and bad guys get good. It’s about particular character traits manifesting themselves in an opposite fashion.

So in the broadest sense, yes, that probably means that heroes are going to be more ruthless because typically the heroes are not that ruthless as compared to the villains. But it’s not necessarily as simple as that. The guiding principle is slightly different.

http://imageshack.com/a/img673/5008/4dgeu7.jpg
In his « Magneto » series, Cullen Bunn has been taking the character down a road of vengeance. He’s been murderous. So I take those attributes of the current Marvel Universe character, and I invert that. Instead of vengeful, he becomes forgiving.

Magneto’s inversion leaves him almost how we saw him back in « Uncanny X-Men » #200. He’s a man who’s desperately trying to redeem himself and do right. These are character alignment inversions, though, so he still has the same memories and knows who he is, but now his choices, what informs those choices, and what he chooses to allow to inform those choices is inverted.

I think, in the simplest possible terms, I tried to avoid good to evil and focus more on who the characters were and three words that could define them. I then would invert those words. So Sam is selfless and now at his core he’s selfish. Sam believed in Democracy and the ideals that his father taught him in his sermons. All of that is now inverted to the opposite where he is cynical, selfish and does not believe in democracy.
