BATMAN BEYOND #1-16 (Dan Jurgens / Bernard Chang)

We’re in the future, and we introduce readers quickly to who Batman Beyond is, what the world is, and who else might be there as quickly as we can.

And from there…it’s exotic adventure. It’s a different world, it’s a glimpse into the future of the DC Universe, and because of that, we can tell wide-open stories on an almost limitless canvas. If we want to say a nuclear weapon hit Gotham and cascaded through and wiped out Metropolis, we can do that. So that kind of wide-open adventure is what you’ll get.
INTERVIEW DE DAN JURGENS ET BERNARD CHANG
In a way, it reminds me a little bit of the way the business used to work, even before I was a creator. If I think back to the stuff I liked as a kid, where I’d be sitting there, and all of a sudden Marvel was doing a book like “Warlock,” or “Captain Marvel” by Jim Starlin, or “Howard the Duck,” “Master of Kung Fu,” anything like that, it always felt very much a business that had properties and concepts grow from the ground up. It didn’t necessarily come from a editorial meeting where they just said, “We need a duck that talks.” It grew from the ground up. There was much of a personal expression, I think, that we saw, coming out of Marvel and DC in some ways back then.

This reminds me somewhat of that. I think this is allowing creators to walk in and say, “I have this vision, and I want to find a way to explore this. I want to talk about this. I want to write about this.” I think that’s what you’re seeing in DC now in this June wave of books. It’s a lot of different voices, it’s a lot of different opinion – and by “opinion,” I’m not talking about political opinion, I’m talking about opinion about what a comic can be, and what a good story can be, and what the visual language of comics might be. I think there’s an awful lot of that happening. It’s very exciting.
No good deed goes unpunished! Freeing the world from Brother Eye was only the beginning—with Neo-Gotham now standing as the only stable society in the known world, thousands of refugees have fled their war-torn cities to come knocking at the gates. But when the mayor of Neo-Gotham claims his city can’t support the whole world, the fate of these people will rest on Batman’s shoulders.

Neo-Gotham, as far as is generally known, is probably the most stable city on Earth. It was able to build a successful defense against Brother Eye that meant it could be preserved.

So, in a bit of a flip as far as the DCU goes, it has now transitioned to something of the shining beacon, which is rather ironic. It’s the place that people seek out, as it means safety and stability.
