BOOK OF DEATH #1-4 (Robert Venditti / Gill, Braithwaite)

En parallèle, l’éditeur publiera chaque mois un one-shot intitulé « The Fall of… ». Ils s’intéresseront aux derniers combats de quatre des héros majeurs de l’univers Valiant: The Fall of Bloodshot (juillet), The Fall of Ninjak (août), The Fall of Harbinger (septembre), The Fall of X-O Manowar (octobre).
We know that the Geomancer is this mystical entity who has a connection to planet Earth – we’re going to expand on what this means for the Valiant Universe as a whole. Following Kay’s death there is now a problem globally – I don’t want to call them natural disasters because they’re so much more horrific than that, but it’s like the natural world is reacting to humanity in an extremely hyper-violent, unexplained way. There’s a mystery as to why this is occurring, and how the new Geomancer may be the answer. Is this the start of a new Dark Age, and if so – is she here to ward it off?

So the two of them go into hiding, and the rest of the Valiant Universe is looking for them. Having done this for many centuries, Gilad sees things in a more long-term manner, whereas the rest of the Valiant Universe sees only a micro, short-term view. Gilad is doing what he thinks is right to protect the geomancer and earth itself, whilst the rest of the Valiant Universe thinks that he is wrong.
Le scénariste Robert Venditti profitera des rares extraits du Livre du Geomancer (illustrés par Doug Braithwaite) pour instiller quelques informations sur l’avenir des séries Valiant.
My answer to that, without giving to much away, is that I can absolutely promise you that some of what we see in the Book of Geomancer excerpt pages are absolutely going to happen in the Valiant Universe. I know this because I go to the writers retreats, where we all sit around a table and talk about the directions of our stories. Those particular items were picked specifically because I know they’re going to happen.

You can tell how much content there is in those excerpt pages. There are a lot of things that we’re putting down. Some of those are things I’m just postulating, or using my own imagination or creativity. Others are things that I know are going to happen. That’s part of the fun of it. I would hope that readers would read this story, and see those pages, and on top of it just being an adventure with Gilad and Tama and the rest of the Valiant Universe, we’ll have another added element of fun. You can look at that and almost use it as a checklist going forward. “Oh, here’s this thing that happened in Book X. I remember reading about that in Book of Death. Check that one off.”

They’ll see which ones they can check off as we come into the coming years in the Valiant Universe, and which ones remain out there to be explored.

We only started publishing about three to four years ago. We’re in a position where we’re still trying to showcase all of the characters to some extent. It’s the same reason we launched originally with only four books and not nine.

I felt Harbinger Wars did a great job of showcasing the Harbinger kids and Bloodshot, and Armor Hunters did a great job of showcasing X-O Manowar. On one hand, we’re still relatively young and working to naturally highlight our characters; on the other, Armor Hunters grew organically from the story Rob was telling in X-O Manowar, Harbinger Wars was a direct result of how we launched both Harbinger and Bloodshot, but with Book of Death we’ve reached a place where we’re not shoe-horning something in. Now, we’re building upon what we’ve published previously.

Obviously, it’s news now that Master Darque is going to be the primary villain, and he was a part of this right from the pitching phase with Warren. I was reading up on the series and looking back through the history of Valiant and its past stories and characters. Then, I found Master Darque. He looked really fun, really interesting, and seemed like he’d be someone who could get me out of my comfort zone. He’s much more of a horror themed character, and I’ve never done anything like that.

I’m always trying to get better as a writer and expand my skillset, so I’m really excited to be working with Master Darque.

Beyond that, there’s going to be a ton of new content in the first issue alone. Favorite characters that people are used to seeing, like Ninjak and Livewire; however, there are also going to be first appearances from classic characters from old Valiant continuity as well. It’s possibly the most amount of content I’ve ever put into any comic I’ve ever written just in terms of volume of concepts and things that are introduced. It’s part of what drew me to the project in the first place – being able to just put all of these threads out there that future writers – either myself or others – may choose to pull on. It’s a great chance to put some new toys in the toy box for others to play with in the future.

From the beginning of The Book of Death, this is something that I’ve had on my mind in terms of how I would work that out. He’s kind of been on the receiving end of a number of fights in the Valiant Universe, you know? And I’m just as guilty of placing him there as anyone else on any of the other books. In X-O Manowar’s“Homecoming” arc when Aric returns back to Earth, he tries to conquer Romania and has his first meeting with the Eternal Warrior in the modern day, making quick work of him by snapping his arm.

The Eternal Warrior’s been on the losing end of a number of fights and I just found myself asking, “Why would that be?” He’s just someone who has a wisdom beyond what anyone can comprehend. It seemed to me he’d have a long game plan there. He’d be up to something by making himself look weaker to someone like Aric or Ninjak and take them by surprise. This way, it sets the stage for this fight in a fashion that respects what came before while still feeling organic and surprising in that given moment.

But for this issue, I really tried not to think too much about the death scene. Instead, I wanted to take what we know about him now and bring the reader forward a hundred or so years into the future. I think that was kind of my idea from the beginning – I want to jump ahead one hundred years! But then I realized he wasn’t an eternal warrior, so I seeded some ideas early on in Ninjak. He doesn’t have any powers, but he is into meditation and he’s always been into various philosophies. So, I used that to help bring him forward for one final battle.

That’s the fun thing: not necessarily the death, but what happened to Unity? To Livewire? What is Ninjak and Eternal Warrior’s relationship like after a hundred years? That was the important thing to me. In Unity, they’re always at odds – bickering, fighting. In this issue, you see over time they’ve become the best of friends. They’re very much alike. It was important that not only did they reconcile, but they became really close over time.
