L’éditeur Titan Comics acquiert les droits de la licence Doctor Who. Elle sera exploitée dès juillet 2014 avec deux nouveaux titres: un sur le 10ème Docteur (incarné par David Tennant à l’écran) et le deuxième sur le 11ème Docteur (Matt Smith). En fin d’année, ils seront rejoint par une troisième série sur la 12ème incarnation du Docteur dont la prestation de Peter Capaldi débutera cet automne avec la diffusion de la huitième saison télévisée.

La série Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor sera écrite à quatre mains par les scénaristes Al Ewing (Loki: Agent of Asgard) et Rob Williams (Revolutionary War). Le dessinateur Simon Fraser se chargera quant à lui de la partie graphique.
La couverture du premier numéro est signée Alice X. Zhang.

I’ll give a nod to the three-week run of Paul Cornell’s « Human Nature » two-parter followed by [Steven] Moffat’s « Blink. » That was a real high point I think. I loved, in Paul’s episode, how he asked Jessica Stephenson’s character to come with him and she tells him off, asks how many people die when he’s on his adventures. I love the joy of the Doctor’s adventuring but I also love the occasional glimpse into the fact that this is a god we’re discussing here, and the weight that offers.

Favorite Smith episode – I thought the 50th Anniversary special was a superb bit of writing. It was such a tightrope but I thought Moffat nailed that one. « The Pandorica » at the close of Smith’s first season was pretty great too. [/quote]

One of the grimmest and darkest episodes of the classic series, skillfully and expertly undermined by the bloke from « The Likely Lads. » If they’d swapped him with Dirty Den I’d be suggesting it seriously.

We’re all huge fans of the TV companions for the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, but everyone knows how Donna and Amy join and leave the show (to say nothing of Rose, Martha or Rory) – and knowing that both the Doctor and companion make it out of each adventure alive robs them of a little bit of impact. You can surround them with red shirts, but they’ll always be red shirts.

With brand new characters that don’t appear in the show, that frisson is back, in a big way.

There’s also a sense that, since the show returned, the emotional lives and narrative arcs of the companions are what drives the series. Bringing in fresh companion characters allows us to show the Doctor in a brand new light, from new perspectives, and to have those all-new characters grow, change and challenge and be challenged by the Doctor and their experiences in the TARDIS. We’re only four issues into the lives of Gabby and Alice, and they’re already putting a firm stamp on their respective eras!

If readers come to care for them even a fraction as much as they do for the TV companions they love, then we’ve achieved our goal. Getting our first pieces of fan art was a wonderful moment, and some of my favorite interactions with fans at conventions have been about the new companions – especially the woman at NYCC, whose Hispanic, David Tennant-loving best friend lived in Sunset Park!

Je reviens sur un échange avec Jack! récemment, dans le sujet sur la série du 10e Docteur :

Je suis tellement nostalgique de ce Docteur que je suis presque prêt à prendre la série, malgré mon rejet des dessins tentant de singer les visages d’acteurs.

Je conseille plutôt celle sur le onzième Docteur qui est de haute volée. Les intrigues s’enchainent vite et dans la bonne humeur tout en développant différents compagnons très attachants (dont David Bowie !?!). Les deux auteurs, Ewing et Morrison, parviennent à émuler le style de Steve Moffat sur une intrigue au long-terme avec des menaces conceptuelles (l’épisode qui se lit à l’envers) ou les tarabiscotages et quiproquos temporels (et que je rencontre Intel qui m’a déjà rencontré dans le futur, etc.) sans pour autant sombrer dans la facilité comme leur maitre à penser.
Surtout que, coté dessin, la série est loin de l’album photo que tu exècres. Les styles de Simon Fraiser (avec ses lignes de vues improbables et ses anatomies difformes) et Boo Cook (même s’il est un peu en deçà de son niveau habituel) rendent justement les manières des personnages, leurs gestuels, sans tomber dans la parodie. Et on reste dans le dessin.

Après avoir lu les six premiers de la série du 11e Docteur, je suis entièrement d’accord avec toi.
Quel plaisir de savourer des histoires cohérentes, bien écrites, très dynamiques, quasiment auto-contenues (seuls les #4 et 5 concernent la même intrigue), bourrées d’idées SF et de personnages bien caractérisés. La menace constante rappelle les meilleures heures des subplots de Russel T. Davies, et le 11e Docteur est très bien écrit, loin des abus et facilités de Moffat sur les derniers temps de Matt Smith dans le rôle.

Je suis conquis, et je partais de loin ! Merci.
Je vais de ce pas me préparer à la suite, malgré le départ d’un des scénaristes.

Vu cet enthousiasme, j’ai aussi décidé de commencer la lecture des Dr Who de Titan Comics par le premier TPB du 11ème Docteur…

Je viens de lire les derniers et il y a un twist concernant la religion qui est quand même sacrément couillu.

Ce qui m’étonne le plus, c’est que Rob Williams, un scénariste dont je me souviens de bien peu de choses, est à la hauteur de son comparse Al Ewing. Je me rappelle m’être dit « oh, flûte » la première fois où son nom est apparu mais, au final, il a clairement bien compris les personnages et la dynamique de série. Résultat, on a une qualité constante tout du long.

Cela dit, on perd un très bon scénariste (Ewing) pour gagner un très bon scénariste (Si Spurrier) (du peu que j’ai lu de lui). Mais c’est vrai que la bonne humeur et le fourmillement d’idées dont fait preuve le premier va manquer à la série.

Et c’était vachement bon ! C’est en effet très bien écrit, bien caractérisé, avec des dialogues épatants, un savoureux Docteur, des nouveaux compagnons déjà très attachants, des bonnes idées en pagaille, du rythme, du fun, un fil rouge intrigant…
Graphiquement, c’est pas mal du tout, malgré quelques légères réserves (mais globalement, c’est tout de même de meilleure qualité que les premiers comics publiés par IDW).
Bref, vivement la suite…et je ne manquerais pas d’acheter également les aventures des autres Docteurs…
