Mineur mais sympathique. Jonathan Hickman & Sanford Greene, qui ont tous deux travaillé sur l’intrigue a priori, s’allient pour livrer une fin possible à Dr Doom. Ici, dans un futur indéterminé, Doom agonise dans l’Espace, survivant uniquement via un sortilège ralentissant ses signes vitaux. Il est récupéré par le vaisseau H.E.R.B.I.E. piloté par une Valeria jeune adulte, qui « ramène » Victor. Ils font le point : Doom est dans un état piteux car son robot géant a été anéanti par un Galactus hors de contrôle. Ce dernier ravage l’Univers en engloutissant les mondes sans se restreindre. La Terre a tenté de se défendre, Reed a formé un plan mais… Galactus les a tous vaincus, et détruits. Valeria a survécu, et cherche Doom. Elle le dote d’une nouvelle armure, formée en Uru et Vibranium, pour contrôler trois Cubes Cosmiques, tandis qu’elle injecte en lui 1% du sérum du Super-Soldat et du sang de Céleste, pour tenir. Elle a en effet vu Galactus anéantir tous les Célestes, et Victor révèle pourquoi : Galactus veut accéder à leurs machines pour détruire l’Univers et en recréé un, et accélérer son rôle de témoin de transition. Le duo mène la fronde, Victor anéantit les Hérauts de Galactus (des Molecule Men), Valeria bloque la machine des Célestes, et Victor repart ainsi dans un duel désespéré, apocalyptique contre Galactus, courant à sa perte (« doom »).
C’est bien, en soi. Sanford Greene livre des planches superbes, travaillées et intenses pour bien caractériser ce moment terrible, où la Vie vacille et ne tient qu’à la survivance de l’esprit acharné et rageur de Victor. Jonathan Hickman écrit bien ce dernier, comme souvent, bien qu’il soit assez « passif » sur l’essentiel, étant donné que la majorité du numéro est un dialogue animé avec Valeria. C’est bien fait, oui, et agréable, avec une bonne voix-off finale, mais… mais ça demeure mineur, finalement, car ça n’apporte qu’une version, un point de vue certes lyrique et prenant sur la fin de Doom.
Une belle curiosité, bien écrite et très bien dessinée ; mais guère plus.
