Thread. Today marks my 30th year writing comics. Thought I’d post a book from each year. It all started with this guy. Right here in 1991.
I got my first monthly book, Ren & Stimpy, in 1992. Thanks, Fabian ! Both were drawn by my friend, Mike Kazaleh. Which is how we met.
Technically, did my first full issue of a Spidey comic in 1993.
This comic ate my brain in 1994. Choose your own adventure + time travel.
Wrote my first 616 Spider-Man story here in 1995. And with Mark Bagley on art !
And did some Spider-Man stories for kids in 1996.
Wrote some Scooby Doo for DC in 1997. (DC were my lifeline for sometime. Especially their licensed comic division. Very grateful to them. They kept my lights on for a long time while I tried to break into super hero comics.)
Very fond of this issue of Looney Tunes from 1998.
Did some Dexter’s Lab in 1999 and other CN work.
In 2000, I worked on Sonic the Hedgehog for Archie.
Wrote my first solo Superman story in 2001.
Wrote some Justice League Adventures stories in 2002. (This broke me into the Justice League office where I got to pitch the project that finally broke me into regular mainstream super hero work !)
Wrote Arkham Asylum: Living Hell in 2003. (Thank you, Dan Raspler !)
Came back to Marvel working on She-Hulk in 2004. (Thank you, Tom Brevoort !)
Wrote the Spider-Man/Human Torch mini-series in 2005.
Had a short run on The Thing. It wrapped in 2006. And I gave him a Bar Mitzvah on the way out.
I got to write the Avengers: The Initiative series in 2007.
In 2008, I got to be part of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day team. I was officially a writer on Amazing Spider-Man. Dream fulfilled.
I wrote Amazing Spider-Man #600 in 2009. And it was drawn by John Romita Jr!
Became the solo writer on ASM in 2010. This also started a wonderfully long collaboration with Humberto Ramos.
Worked on Matters of Life & Death in 2011 with Marcos Martin !
I wrote Amazing Spider-Man #700 in 2012. (And I killed Peter Parker. And everyone was cool with it. Totally cool with it. Like you wouldn’t believe.)
Launched a little something called Superior Spider-Man in 2013 with Stegman, Ramos, and Camuncoli.
In 2014, Superior wrapped, Peter Parker came back, we kicked off a Spidey event called Spider-Verse, and I got to launch a Silver Surfer revival with my pals, Mike & Laura Allred !
In 2015 the Silver Surfer team made an Eisner winning comic. We were all proud of it. It was the 2nd comic of my life that ate my brain.
Mike, Laura, and I made this comic in 2016. It’s silly. And I love it.
In 2017, we wrapped up our Silver Surfer run. We did 29 issues and a short story in a Marvel Now one-shot. I don’t think we dinged a single issue in the lot.
In 2018, I wrote ASM 800. And Marcos helped me say goodbye to Spidey in ASM #801. I’m very proud of the entire run.
In 2018 I had the honor of launching a new Iron Man and FF titles with Valerio and Sara. (And I immediately married Ben & Alicia.) in 2019, they were attacked by the Hulk on their honeymoon. Sean killed on this story.
Chris, Pete, Joe & I got to do IRON MAN 2020 in 2020 !
In 2021, I’m working with RB on FF and having a blast ! (Covers by the amazing Mark Brooks !)
And I’m currently working on the FF 60th anniversary issue with John Romita Jr ! (Literally. Going back to work in 10 minutes. This 30-year-journey tweet was saved as a draft ages ago.)
It’s the journey of a lifetime.
Writing comics is all I ever wanted to do.
THANK YOU for supporting me.
I know I can be a crank, but I really do love you all.Thank you to all my editors & their offices for putting up w/ me for 30 years.
Especially Steve & Nick.
AND MOSTLY TOM.
To be continued…
