Après la mini-série Invisible Woman et la série Future Foundation, Marvel annonce un nouveau titre dérivé pour les 4 Fantastiques. Cette nouvelle publication prendra la forme d’une série de one-shots qui sortiront à un rythme trimestriel (sur le même modèle que les Web of Venom).
Prévu pour août, le premier numéro spécial intitulé Fantastic Four : 4 Yancy Street sera écrit par Gerry Duggan et dessiné par Greg Smallwood (qui avaient récemment collaboré sur le one-shotDoctor Strange : The Best Defense).

Duggan : Well, Ben’s brother was killed when he was the leader of the Yancy Gang, and now he’s out in the streets looking for a kid with a spray can after the youth center that Ben opened in his brother’s name was vandalized with a message calling for the FF to pack up and return to their fancy tower. Needless to say, Ben doesn’t handle it so well.
Duggan : Oh, yes. Greg is a sublime talent. That Dr. Strange issue was lightning in a bottle for us.
I loved that Defenders event - and our chapter was already about death and immortality through your work… then we heard Steve Ditko passed, and our collaboration took on a new meaning. He brings that same energy and passion to his part of this FF story, too.
Les apparitions du grand frère de Ben Grimm sont résolument rares (et pour cause, il est mort jeune) : elle se limitent visiblement à une poignée de numéros ; le 1er numéro de Byrne & Wilson pour le lancement de la série The Thing post-Marvel Two-In-One (le seul épisode du titre à être paru en V.F. dans Nova) et un fill-in post-Simonson/pré-DeFalco (toujours inédit en V.F. celui-là).
Edit : j’ai failli oublier la séquence flashback dans la série de Slott (The Thing #5, puis l’hommage au disparu dans The Thing #6), un des épisodes fill-in de Kesel (#56), ou encore la fin de l’arc « Hereafter ».
C’es fréquent, hélas. Lors de la première annonce, il n’y a qu’un seul dessinateur. Et dès qu’on s’approche de la sortie, on se rend compte que d’autres noms sont venus s’ajouter au projet. C’est comme les one-shots Héros/Vilains de Star Wars. Certains des dessinateurs annoncés n’ont pas tenu le rythme, ce qui enlève une unité graphique à l’ensemble…
C’était mignon, joli et sympa’ ; mais complètement anecdotique.
Gerry Duggan scénarise un one-shot dessiné par plusieurs auteurs (Greg Smallwood, Mark Bagley, Luciano Vecchio, Pere Perez), pour plusieurs ambiances mais une histoire. Dans Yancy Street, où vivent les F.F. depuis leur retour, Ben a depuis longtemps installé un centre pour jeunes, au nom de son frère mort, Jacob, dans le cadre de mauvaises fréquentations. Sauf que le centre a été tagué ; il s’énerve. Remonte la piste. Se prend quelques piques d’un jeune, mais aussi d’habitants obligés de partir par la montée des loyers du fait de la présence de l’équipe. S’énerve, se bat avec des gros bras envoyés par des bailleurs agressifs, et finit par trouver un happy-end. Même si Dr Doom se rit de lui.
C’est mignon, oui. Gerry Duggan sait bien écrire Ben Grimm, et sa caractérisation de Yancy Street est correcte. L’ensemble est dynamique, fluide ; ça se lit bien. Le twist est fun. L’émotion est bien dosée, le début est notamment touchant. Les artistes sont bien choisis, et s’insèrent bien, sans défaut de style, ou sans transition qui jure.
C’est sympa’, oui. Mais ça sera vite oublié. A conseiller aux inconditionnels du quatuor, et de la Chose.
