IMPERIAL WAR : NOVA - CENTURION (Jed McKay, Jonathan Hickman / Matteo Della Fonte)

People sometimes seem to forget that one of the biggest influences on classic 1960s science fiction series were Westerns (Gene Roddenberry wrote some excellent episodes of Have Gun - Will Travel, and specifically used « It’s like Wagon Train in space » as his pitch for Star Trek), so it is great to see that approach continue with this series. What drew you to that classic Western vibe with the Paladin-esque storytelling ?

What drew me to it wasn’t a Western vibe, but Jonathan’s first one-line pitch: « It’s the Rockford Files, in space. » I don’t think it’s any secret that I love 70s and 80s PI shows, given how much I mention Magnum PI in my comics, and Thomas Magnum has always been the aspirational 80s version of Jim Rockford. They live on the beach, they’re kind of bums with hearts of gold and tough pasts (prison/Vietnam), and drive sick cars, and that’s the same kind of template that fits perfectly onto Rich Rider post-Imperial. It’s just that he is the sick car.

Tom Selleck apparait d’ailleurs dans quelques épisodes de The Rockford Files.
